A Civil/Structural Engineer supporting substation projects is responsible for the evaluation, design, and modification of civil and structural infrastructure required to safely install and replace electrical equipment such as circuit breakers, disconnect switches, and associated switchgear assemblies. Their role ensures that all structural systems meet utility standards, applicable codes, and site-specific operational requirements while maintaining constructability and system reliability during replacement activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Existing Conditions Assessment
    • Perform site visits and field investigations to evaluate existing foundations, steel structures, equipment supports, and bus support systems.
    • Review as-built drawings, geotechnical reports, and original design calculations.
    • Assess structural adequacy for new switchgear loads, including vertical, lateral, seismic, wind, and short-circuit forces.
    • Identify conflicts with underground utilities, grounding grids, duct banks, and oil containment systems.
  • Foundation & Structural Design
    • Design new equipment foundations for breakers, switches, operating mechanisms, and control cabinets.
    • Develop modifications or reinforcements to existing foundations where reuse is feasible.
    • Design structural steel supports, equipment pedestals, and mounting frames.
    • Analyze anchor bolt systems, embedments, and base plate connections.
    • Ensure compliance with ACI, AISC, ASCE, IEEE, and utility structural standards.
  • Switch Replacement Engineering Support
    • Evaluate demolition requirements for existing switches and foundations.
    • Design temporary support structures or bus bracing required during staged replacements.
    • Assess clearances and equipment elevations to maintain electrical safety and phase spacing.
    • Coordinate outage sequencing impacts on structural work.
  • Civil Site Design
    • Develop grading and drainage plans impacted by new equipment elevations.
    • Design gravel surfacing, equipment pads, and access pathways.
    • Modify oil containment systems and spill control features as required.
    • Coordinate trenching, duct bank routing, and conduit stub-ups associated with new switch control wiring.
  • Seismic & Structural Analysis
    • Perform structural loading calculations including dead and live loads, wind loads, seismic forces, fault and operating forces from switchgear.
    • Conduct finite element or frame analysis where required.
  • Construction & Installation Support
    • Provide Issued-For-Construction (IFC) drawing packages.
    • Respond to RFIs and contractor field inquiries.
    • Review shop drawings and equipment submittals.
    • Conduct site inspections to verify foundation construction and anchor placement.

Contract duration of more than 6 months with 40 hours per week.
