Freedom Professional Services are seeking a Senior Primary Design Engineer to join our growing team and work on a variety of complex and challenging engineering projects, helping to deliver the UK’s Net Zero targets. Our projects span the complete energy system — from generation, transmission, distribution, and storage to load-end consumers in manufacturing, processing, data, and recycling.
This is a home-based role; however, you will be expected to attend nearby Freedom or NG Bailey offices in line with our hybrid working policy. The role will also require travel to other Freedom/NG Bailey offices and client sites across the UK, with overnight stays where necessary.
The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate:
- A strong history of teamworking, career achievement, and high-quality project delivery.
- Relevant work experience in the sector.
- The ability to draw on professional networks to gain insights, identify new work opportunities, secure third-party support, and obtain peer reviews.
- Promote safety through design and actively participate in hazard review meetings.
- Perform site surveys and collaborate with site teams as required.
- Develop concept and preliminary designs based on tender information.
- Generate and review general arrangement drawings, substation layouts, single-line diagrams, and related documentation.
- Prepare and refine technical specifications for designs and equipment.
- Carry out design calculations to support plant design, including:
- Switchroom blast pressure calculations.
- Busbar sizing and short-circuit calculations.
- Cable thermal and mechanical force calculations.
- Switchroom heating and ventilation calculations.
- Small power and lighting calculations.
- Compound lightning protection calculations.
- Switchroom lighting calculations.
- Ensure timely delivery, effective requirements management, and a “right-first-time” approach.
- Achieve key performance indicators for design quality and on-time delivery.
- Comply with project documentation, employer requirements, and industry standards.
What We’re Looking For
Senior engineers in our team are expected to bring technical, ethical, social, and management competence to every job we deliver for our professional clients and key stakeholders.
Essential skills include:
- Strong budgetary and project management capabilities.
- Good commercial understanding of design and construction contract forms such as NEC.
- Experience of working within contract conditions.
We actively encourage professional registration and chartership. Senior engineers are expected to be chartered or close to achieving chartership.
Qualifications & Experience
- Degree in Engineering (Electrical preferred).
- Chartered Status (preferred): Chartered Engineer (CEng) with a professional body such as the Institution of Engineering and Technology (IET) or Institution of Electrical Engineers (IEE).
- Strong experience in EHV/HV substation plant design, with a proven track record of delivering complex projects within the power sector.
- Full UK driving licence.
- Health & Safety qualification (e.g., NEBOSH, IOSH) desirable but not essential.
