Freedom is currently seeking an OHL Design Engineer to join the electrical services design team based in London, working on a range of complex engineering projects aligned with the country’s Net Zero targets. Our projects encompass the entire energy system, from generation and transmission to distribution, storage, and end-user applications in manufacturing, processing, data centers, and recycling. The successful candidate will collaborate with the team lead, responsible for designing and delivering overhead line (OHL) projects, providing technical expertise and guidance to the team.
Key responsibilities include:
- Design and develop OHL projects, ensuring compliance with safety standards, technical standards, and client specifications.
- Develop technical solutions and offer guidance on OHL design aspects, including conductor sizing, insulator selection, lightning protection, and structure and foundation design.
- Review and approve technical documents like specifications, drawings, and calculations for accuracy and compliance.
- Coordinate with clients, contractors, and stakeholders to ensure timely and quality project delivery.
- Provide technical support, mentorship, and training to the team.
- Operate within the company’s quality assurance protocols or established project management standards.
- Participate in site visits, inspections, and meetings as required.
Candidate requirements:
We seek engineers with diverse skills bringing technical, ethical, social, and managerial competencies. Strong project management and budget skills are essential, along with a good understanding of design and construction contracts like NEC. Candidates should be either chartered or close to achieving chartership.
Qualifications and experience:
- Degree in Electrical Engineering or related field.
- Experience in OHL design within the power transmission and distribution industry.
- Strong knowledge of OHL design principles and UK standards.
- Experience producing designs, calculations, reports, and drawings for projects from 11kV to 400kV.
- Proficiency with design software such as PLS-CADD, PLS-POLE, and PLS-TOWER.
- Excellent communication skills for technical and non-technical audiences.
- Ability to manage multiple projects efficiently.
- Understanding of CDM 2015 and Electricity Regulations.
- Knowledge of AutoCAD 3D; MicroStation CAD skills are desirable.
- Full UK driving license.
