Our Content Team FreeAgent’s Content team takes complex information and turns it into compelling writing for our customers. We’re focused on communicating in an engaging way but also the clearest possible, so our customers feel empowered, not confused. We’re a creative bunch and often identify emergent issues to tell our customers about, whilst also flexing FreeAgent's tone of voice to bring our brand to life, and now and again a smile to our customers' faces.
The role
At FreeAgent, content is pivotal to our strategy for communicating with our key audiences of small business owners, accountants and bookkeepers at every stage of the marketing journey. In the Small Businesses and Corporate stream, we use content to:
- raise awareness of FreeAgent’s award-winning online accounting software among small business owners
- attract and acquire new customers
- help our small business customers get the most out of using our software
- engage our small business customers at every stage of their FreeAgent journey
- communicate corporate messages to relevant audiences
As Senior Content Manager in the Small Business and Corporate Stream you will be responsible for supporting the Lead Editor (Small Businesses and Corporate) in developing and executing FreeAgent’s content marketing strategy for small business owners. Day to day your role will involve:
- Creating content and copy that is engaging, valuable and compelling and supports the delivery of marketing objectives and targets for FreeAgent’s small business audience
- Drafting, editing and proofreading a wide range of content, ensuring that all content is accurate, of a high standard and in line with our editorial guidelines
- Briefing other members of the content team and freelance writers on content creation projects and delivering editorial feedback in a constructive and supportive way
- Ensuring that the benefits, features and functionality of FreeAgent’s accounting software are expertly articulated in our content for small businesses
- In collaboration with the small businesses communications team, develop, plan and deliver content plans and projects to meet marketing objectives
- Supporting the small businesses communications team in delivering against marketing objectives by sharing best practice, highlighting opportunities and maximising the role that content can play in a communications project or campaign
- Understanding regulatory guidelines and requirements and implementing these in content work wherever appropriate, consulting with relevant stakeholders
- Preparing content briefs and instructions for other members of the content team to tackle with your support and feedback
- Contributing to the development of new content strategies and the evolution of existing strategies through data-driven insights and best practice knowledge and experience
- Demonstrating a solid understanding of the metrics we aim to influence with our content strategy, reporting on them confidently and suggesting ways to achieve greater impact
- Developing subject matter expertise in the small business sector, keeping a close eye on trends and using this expertise to add value to content plans, projects and strategies for our small business audience
- Working with the Managing Editor, Lead Editor and peers in the content team to execute our overall content strategy, in collaboration with key stakeholders in the small businesses communications team.
When the role includes line management responsibilities, you will be expected to follow FreeAgent’s people management processes, including conducting weekly 1:1 meetings, regular PDP reviews to discuss performance and growth and bi-annual salary/promotion reviews.

Work pattern for this role
This is a fixed-term maternity cover contract, full-time role (Monday to Friday, 9am to 5pm) until the 31st December 2025. This role will be based in our Edinburgh office, however there will be an opportunity to adopt hybrid working, under an agreed pattern of 2 days (currently Tuesdays and Thursdays) from the office and 3 days at home each week. Working from home is second nature to us as we have been championing remote working for years.
Perks
Annual starting salary of £45,000 - £50,500 per annum depending on experience, with room to progress to £56,000 within the band.
