Help us turn our approved UX designs into reality for our new web-based transcription tool (FreeComETT). Our volunteer transcribers need this to get historical records into our database that anyone can search for free.
What difference will you make?
We believe that everyone has a right to access their family’s historical records for free. Barriers to this can have a massive impact on the marginalised in society who need access to records, for example, to establish their residency status. By helping our volunteer-led charity to provide a new, web-based transcription tool, you will help enable Free UK Genealogy to properly fulfil our mission to provide free access to records for all, and not hide them behind paywalls.
What are we looking for?
What You Bring Minimum commitment of 6 months with 3-6 hours per week Engagement during working hours Monday – Friday with some flexibility in the evenings Essential Strong HTML, CSS, Java script, PHP Knowledge of web based architecture Version control, testing and debugging Ability to deliver from approved design to deployment Desirable MongoDB, SQL Agile delivery experience Git, GitHub Awareness of web accessibility and user-centric design
What will you be doing?
We are a small team of volunteers and permanent staff working on rebranding our existing FreeComETT-REG transcription tool. This tool allows transcribers to enter death, marriage and burials historical registers. We are currently in the UX phase and need experienced front end developer volunteers to implement the approved UX designs. What You\’ll Do Build our front end web based Transcription tool using HTML, CSS, Java script, PHP, MONGO DB, SQL Work across Agile team to deliver our user-centric Transcription tool Focus on useability, maintainability, and reliability from day one Enhance development processes as required Support development and test environments
