We are in an exciting period of change, with a new strategy to take us to the end of the decade and new projects launching soon. Offering your support would have a wide-reaching impact on thousands of volunteers and family history researchers.
What are we looking for?
- The successful applicant will ideally have experience as either a transcriber or coordinator with one of our projects.
- Applicants with experience outside of one of these areas but with experience highly pertinent to our operations would also be considered.
- They will also have the ability, time and flexibility to meet the commitments of the role.
The Board of Trustees meets every two months, mostly via video conferencing. There are seven board committees that typically meet monthly. We would be looking for the new trustees to be a member of at least one of these:
- FreeREG Steering Committee
- FreeCEN Steering Committee
- FreeBMD Steering Committee
- Technical Steering Committee
- Finance Committee
- Risk Committee
- Fundraising Steering Group
Trustees are also often involved in work outside of the meetings mainly through email exchanges and assisting in their area of expertise. The role of Trustee is unpaid and Trustees are expected to take part in all meetings that they have committed to. Trustees are appointed for a term of three years and may be reappointed for up to two more terms.
What will you be doing?
Free UK Genealogy is the UK charity that administers the FreeREG, FreeBMD and FreeCEN projects. Our strategy focuses on three main elements: Quality, Value, and Growth. We’re seeking a capable, motivated individual to join our Board of Trustees to help shape the strategic growth of the organisation and to complement the skills and experience of the existing Trustees. We have recently launched a new transcription platform – FreeComett – and are developing a new website – FreeBMD2 – and a new project – FreePRO.
The key responsibilities of trustees are:
- Ensure Free UK Genealogy is carrying out our purposes for the public benefit
- Comply with Free UK Genealogy’s Constitution and the law
- Act in Free UK Genealogy’s best interests
- Manage Free UK Genealogy’s resources responsibly
- Act with reasonable care and skill
- Ensure Free UK Genealogy is accountable
