Submarine Systems / Facilities Assurance Consultant
Salary range: ÂŁ50,000 to ÂŁ70,000 per annum depending on experience
Location: Plymouth
Working Pattern: We operate a flexible hybrid working pattern at Frazer‑Nash, with time split between the office, client sites and working from home. For serving members of the Armed Forces, we will consider applications up to 12 months prior to your Tx date. Closing date is 11th January 2026, but early application encouraged.

We have a key presence in the defence maritime sector, supporting a wide range of clients in support of current and future Naval Reactor Plants (NRP), Nuclear Facilities, Submarine Equipment and Submarine Systems. We are also supporting AUKUS and pride ourselves on the high‑quality support we deliver to the Submarine Enterprise. Our continued growth in this arena means we are actively seeking experienced professionals to support and promote further development.
Based out of our new Plymouth office set in the historical surroundings of Royal William Yard, we are actively seeking individuals with a background and commitment in any of the following; submarine systems engineering, submarine facility engineering, safety management or safety case development in the nuclear industry.
You will be joining a diverse team and dynamic team who support engineering and safety portfolios within the Submarine Enterprise; there will also be opportunities to get involved with a wider range of projects being delivered by Frazer‑Nash. We welcome service leavers who will add to the already well represented network of ex‑Service personnel.
Key Responsibilities
- Providing technical guidance and design support to the AUKUS programme.
- Design and project management of nuclear submarine facility improvement projects.
- Identifying new and emergent technologies with a 50‑year look ahead, looking at management of accumulation of biofouling organisms in future classes of submarines, whilst minimising the impact of any treatment on the environment.
- Assessing the impact of an unconventional option to reduce submarine radiated acoustic noise on personnel, systems and equipment, to establish the limitations, shortfalls and the potential benefits that could be obtained.
- Providing technical support and guidance to innovative \”in‑water\” submarine engineering solutions.
- Providing suitably qualified and experienced personnel knowledge into Pressurised Water Reactor (PWR) 1, 2 and 3 related projects.
- Assessing and producing nuclear safety substantiation and safety justification documents in support of a modern standards nuclear safety case.
- Supporting Submarine Systems Delivery Team (CSDT) in the development of documentation to improve through‑life management.
- Applying technical knowledge across a range of safety cases and documentation.
- In time, supported by appropriate training you will manage your own projects to meet time, cost and quality expectations while creating trusting relationships with clients and stakeholders, identifying and following up on new business opportunities.
The Person
We are seeking an individual motivated by engineering and/or safety, driven by curiosity and a commitment to support submarine capabilities, who is able to demonstrate the following strengths: curiosity and continuous learning – an inquisitive individual, with an interest in engineering technologies helping to advance defence capability; skilled in questioning assumptions and established practices, bringing a new perspective and constructive challenge to traditional thinking; a willingness and enthusiasm to embrace change and uncertainty with confidence, maintaining professionalism and responsiveness to fluid projects.

Desirable
- Detailed knowledge of the submarine ship systems, Nuclear Steam Raising Plant systems or Combat systems.
- Detailed knowledge of the submarine facility and associated facility systems and their associated safety cases.
- Working knowledge of the application of safety regulation, policy and standards, with experience relevant to UK MOD approaches to submarine safety such as DSA Regulations, Defence Nuclear Safety Regulations, Naval Authority Certification, SDA Safety Policy and Management systems.
- Understanding of safety analysis techniques, including HAZID, hazard management, functional hazard assessment, Cat and Class, Safety Integrity Level (SIL) assessment, software safety assessment, ALARP assessment.
- Working knowledge of Technical Assurance/Governance and Maturity Assessment of the Maritime Concept, Assessment, Demonstration, Manufacture, In‑Service and Disposal (CADMID) cycle.
- Experience of working with or within the Submarine Delivery Agency (In‑Service Submarines, Nuclear Propulsion Project Teams (NPPT), Equipment Project Teams, CSDT etc).
- Chartered Engineer status is preferred, along with a membership of a relevant professional body, or working towards Chartered Engineer status.
- We welcome applications from ex‑submarine operators (MESM Cat A1/A2, Cat B) and senior WESM personnel, and candidates with comparable industry experience.
Due to the nature of the work that Frazer‑Nash Consultancy undertake, candidates will be required to undergo pre‑employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.
