Salary range: £45,000 to £55,000 per annum depending on experience

Location: Bristol

Working Pattern: We operate a flexible hybrid working pattern at Frazer-Nash, with time split between the office, client sites and working from home.

As a Materials Engineer working for the Materials Performance group at Frazer-Nash Consultancy, you will supply crucial expertise to help solve the varied technical and scientific challenges that are faced by material engineers in the 21st century. You have an enquiring mind, as evidenced by your materials related degree, with a focus on materials specification compliance (ASTM standards), manufacturing processes, welding technologies, and nuclear materials. You will play a critical role in ensuring material integrity, performance, and regulatory compliance across a range of high-specification projects, particularly in the nuclear and manufacturing sectors. You are someone who enjoys working with people, can actively listen and has empathy for our client\’s problems and a desire to find solutions. You will be required to undertake and supervise technical projects for a range of clients, translating technical details into implementable recommendations. You will provide technical and project leadership and assure delivery to cost, timescales and quality requirements. You have experience of applying your technical knowledge in industry, helping to solve real-world problems.

You will be required to:

  • Interpret and apply ASTM, ASME, and other relevant materials standards to support design, procurement, and quality assurance.
  • Evaluate and select materials for use in nuclear environments, considering radiation tolerance, corrosion resistance, and mechanical performance.
  • Provide technical support for welding processes, including procedure qualification, weldability assessments, and defect analysis.
  • Collaborate with design, manufacturing, and quality teams to ensure material specifications align with project requirements.
  • Support material testing programs, including mechanical, chemical, and non-destructive testing (NDT).
  • Maintain up-to-date knowledge of nuclear regulatory requirements and industry best practices.
  • Prepare and review technical documentation, including specifications, and compliance reports.

As part of our Materials Performance group, you will join a vibrant group of engineers and scientist, who are shaping the nature of the services we offer and the direction of the company, whose contributions make a significant, positive impact to our clients, to society and to the environment. You will actively support junior colleagues and you are committed to personal development, including having, or working towards, Chartered status.

Essential Requirements:

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Materials Science, Metallurgy, Materials Engineering or a related degree with a significant materials content.
  • Experience of ASTM standards and materials selection for engineering applications.
  • Working knowledge of manufacturing processes including forming, machining, and heat treatment.
  • Familiarity with welding techniques (e.g., TIG, MIG, SMAW) and associated standards (e.g., ASME Section IX).
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Excellent communication and documentation abilities.

Desired Requirements:

  • A PhD in a Materials related subject
  • Knowledge of nuclear codes and standards (e.g., RCC-M, NQA-1).
  • Experience in nuclear or highly regulated industries (e.g., aerospace, defence, energy).

Due to the nature of the work that Frazer-Nash Consultancy undertake, candidates will be required to undergo pre-employment screening and must be able to satisfy clearance criteria for UK National Security Vetting.
