The Company
A globally leading, multi-billion-pound manufacturer of control and automation components, supplying advanced solutions to OEMs and industrial customers across a wide range of sectors. With a strong international presence, a solid UK operation, and ambitious growth plans, they are investing in their commercial team to strengthen their position in electric automation and machine control solutions.
The Opportunity
A fantastic opportunity has arisen for a technically capable sales professional to join a well-established field sales team focused on OEM customers. This is a consultative, solution-led sales role aimed at supporting machine builders and industrial automation customers with electrical automation solutions. The successful candidate will inherit an established customer base with significant untapped potential, along with opportunities to develop additional business across existing and underdeveloped accounts.
The Role
You will be responsible for managing and developing OEM accounts within your territory and selling electrical automation solutions in a consultative, commercially strategic way. Rather than purely product-pushing, the role focuses on understanding customer machine architectures, control philosophies, and application requirements, then positioning the right solution to improve performance and long-term value. You will work closely with application engineering teams that provide detailed technical support, sizing, and system design input, but you must be able to identify opportunities, lead technical sales conversations, and confidently discuss how automation technologies fit into broader machine architectures.
- Managing a defined portfolio of OEM accounts across a designated territory
- Growing existing business while developing underpenetrated and target accounts
- Selling electrical automation solutions through a consultative, application-led approach
- Identifying customer needs and aligning solutions around control systems, motion, communications, and wider machine architecture
- Building relationships with engineers, technical stakeholders, and decision-makers within OEM customers
- Working closely with internal application engineering teams to support technically complex opportunities
- Developing business plans for target accounts and driving long-term revenue growth
- Maintaining a strong pipeline across existing and prospective opportunities within the assigned account base
This is not a cold-calling territory build role. The business already has a large database of target customers and established accounts, so the focus is on winning share, developing relationships, and converting known opportunities rather than driving around looking for unknown prospects.
Candidate Profile
We are looking for someone with a blend of commercial ability and genuine technical understanding in electric automation. You do not need to be a deep product specialist in one narrow area, but you must understand how electrical automation technologies fit together within a machine or system. This could include areas such as PLCs, servo drives, industrial Ethernet, communications, machine control, decentralisation, digitalisation, and overall control architecture.
Suitable backgrounds could include:
- Automation component manufacturers
- Value-added distributors
- Technical distributors
- Systems integrators
- Automation solution providers selling into OEMs
Key Requirements
- Experience in a sales role within industrial automation, control, or electrical automation
- Strong understanding of electrical automation and machine control concepts
- Ability to discuss areas such as PLCs, drives, communications, industrial Ethernet, control architecture, and related automation technologies
- Experience selling to OEMs is preferred
- Solution-selling mindset with the ability to take a consultative, customer-focused approach
- Strong commercial awareness and the ability to grow a territory strategically
- Engineering education is beneficial, but not essential if supported by strong relevant experience
- Full UK driving licence
Why Join?
This is a strong opportunity to join a major international automation business at a time when it is actively evolving its commercial focus toward the future of electrical automation. The UK business is performing well, has clear growth ambitions, and offers the backing of an established technical and commercial infrastructure. It is an excellent fit for a technically credible sales engineer who wants to move beyond transactional product sales and into a more consultative, strategic role with a market-leading brand.
