Frankham is seeking a motivated and ambitious Principal Engineer to join the Rail team, with scope to support the wider Infrastructure Engineering division which includes Maritime and Asset Management. This is a strategic technical leadership role suited to an experienced engineer who can lead projects, influence client relationships, and support the development of engineers and graduates.
You will operate within a growing and energetic team, engaging with a varied portfolio that includes Station Developments, AFA schemes, bridge design, and renewal projects. The position provides a strong platform for progression and an opportunity to contribute to award nominated engineering work. The Infrastructure Engineering team has been shortlisted for both the New Civil Engineer and Railway Industry Association RISE awards and holds long standing Investors in People Gold accreditation.

Key Responsibilities
- Act as Technical Lead and undertake project management responsibilities as required
- Operate with autonomy while maintaining strong time management and accountability
- Act as Line Manager and provide direction, support and development to project team members
- Mentor the technical knowledge and commercial understanding of colleagues
- Define project scope, budget and programme and allocate resources accordingly
- Prepare fee proposals and agree scopes of work with clients
- Lead the financial, technical and managerial delivery of multiple projects
- Supervise, check and approve technical reports, specifications, calculations and drawings
- Ensure design outputs meet relevant standards and regulatory requirements
- Lead design reviews and coordinate multi disciplinary inputs
- Oversee the production of high quality specifications and drawings
- Undertake inspections, examinations and scoping visits with clients
- Maintain strong working knowledge of Health and Safety legislation, Codes of Practice and design standards
- Chair and attend client and stakeholder meetings
- Support business development and represent the company at external engagements
- Lead or contribute to tender activity including presentations
Skills and Experience
- Minimum of eight years experience in civil or structural engineering, ideally in the Rail sector
- Chartered or Incorporated with ICE or IStructE
- CRE D experience is essential
- Demonstrable experience leading teams and managing project finances
- Strong design experience across a range of civil engineering works within Rail
- Proven track record in delivering projects within time and budget
- Working knowledge of commercial management is desirable
- Experience checking and approving designs and calculations
- Strong understanding of Eurocodes, Network Rail standards and Railway Group and British Standards
- Deep knowledge of Network Rail assurance processes
- Multi disciplinary design coordination experience
- Proficiency in structural analysis software such as Tekla Tedds, Tekla Structural Designer, S Frame, Robot, MIDAS, LUSAS or equivalents
- Strong communication capability in client facing environments
- Competent in MS Office
- Demonstrable people management experience
- Strong working knowledge of CDM regulations
