Position: Laboratory Research Scientist – part time (2 days per week)

Salary: From £36,535 (pro rata) with benefits subject to skills and experience.

Reporting to: Head of Genomics Science Technology Platform.

Contract: This is a part‑time (2 days per week) fixed‑term contract for 12 months on Crick terms and conditions.

About the role: The Genomics Science Technology Platform delivers cutting‑edge next‑generation sequencing services. The team supports over one hundred research groups and runs a wide spectrum of genomic technologies including Illumina, Oxford Nanopore, 10x Genomics and spatial genomics.

What you will be doing: As a Laboratory Research Scientist, you will proactively provide reliable cross‑covering support across the spectrum of work in the Genomics STP. This includes sample submission, nucleic acid extractions, library preparation and spatial assays. You will operate automated liquid handling platforms, monitor QC metrics, help implement new technologies, optimise and troubleshoot workflows, communicate with stakeholders, maintain data integrity and contribute to SOPs. You will also help maintain equipment and adhere to health and safety requirements.

About you:

  • Qualification: A degree in molecular biology, genomics or a related field (or equivalent experience).
  • Experience: Considerable practical experience in a molecular biology laboratory setting ideally a high‑throughput genomics environment. Hands‑on experience with nucleic acid extraction using an automated platform such as the QIAcube Kingfisher. Hands‑on experience with quality control methods for nucleic acids and full NGS library preparation. Knowledge of a range of NGS methods including RNA‑seq, ATAC‑seq, whole‑genome / exome sequencing and targeted panels. Capable of following protocols and SOPs and suggesting improvements.

Employment type: Part‑time.
