Job Title: Lead Animator
Animators produce the motion and performance of three-dimensional computer graphic characters, creatures, objects, and crowds for high-end VFX films.
Responsibilities:
- Lead a team of animators on a show
- Act as the key contact for production and supervisors, maintaining clear communication, addressing creative challenges, providing solutions, and adapting to changes in production and scheduling
- Set and manage team assignments in collaboration with the animation supervisor
- Understand the animation tasks and potential technical and creative challenges
- Deputise for the animation supervisor if necessary
- Ensure workflow templates, methodology, and documentation are followed and available
- Coordinate with technology teams to ensure tools are available and properly set up
- Inform supervisors and the Head of Department of project advances for integration into other shows
- Assist with bids when requested
- Manage the team to prevent conflicts and disagreements
- Maintain positive relationships with other departments and address issues promptly
- Attend dailies, present team work, and guide artists in presentation
- Coach and share knowledge, supporting the progression of junior team members
- Provide regular feedback to ensure timely delivery of high-quality work
- Collaborate with technical animators to keep show wikis updated
Requirements:
- Previous experience mentoring or leading a team
- Thorough knowledge of Maya
- Understanding of physical motion, weight, balance, texture, and form
- Knowledge of rigs, rigging setups, animation pipelines, and data transfer between tools
- Ability to work under pressure
- Openness to direction and change
- Reliability, good time management, and meeting deadlines
- Excellent organization, communication, and interpersonal skills
- Commitment to creative collaboration and teamwork
- Willingness to learn new processes and technical skills
- Knowledge of modeling, rigging, and Mel/Python scripting
- Knowledge of human and animal anatomy and life drawing skills
- Experience with motion capture data
- Traditional animation and/or art background
