Short Focus magazine is looking for volunteer journalists to write about the world of independent short film.

Published by Frame Light, Short Focus magazine celebrates short films, independent filmmakers, emerging voices, and the creative stories behind bold, compact cinema. We are looking for contributors who are passionate about film, culture, storytelling, and discovering new talent.

This is a volunteer role suited to aspiring journalists, film writers, critics, students, graduates, bloggers, or anyone looking to build a portfolio in arts and culture journalism.

What you will do

  • Write articles, interviews, reviews, and features focused on short films and independent filmmakers.
  • Pitch original story ideas connected to short film, indie cinema, and the wider filmmaking community.
  • Contribute to the tone and growth of a periodical magazine dedicated to short-form cinema.
  • Cover emerging directors, actors, producers, writers, festivals, and creative teams.
  • Help spotlight underrepresented voices and new creative talent.

We are looking for someone who

  • Has a strong interest in short films, independent cinema, or arts journalism.
  • Enjoys researching filmmakers, films, festivals, and creative trends.
  • Wants to develop a writing portfolio and gain editorial experience.
  • Is curious, reliable, and able to work to agreed deadlines.
  • Can write clearly, thoughtfully, and engagingly.
