An opportunity has arisen for a Paralegal to join the Group Actions Team at Hugh James. Hugh James specialises in acting on behalf of clients in relation to various types of collective claims and has been at the forefront of group action litigation for over 20 years. Due to the growth within this sector, we have an opportunity for a paralegal wishing to pursue a career in collective and group litigation to assist with the handling of various case types.

The successful candidate will be assisting with the handling of collective professional negligence claims against firms of solicitors relating to the handling of cavity wall and mortgage mis‑selling cases as well as collective claims against insurers for business interruption losses arising from Covid-19 lockdowns. You may be required to assist with other collective cases.

The Role

  • Dealing with initial enquiries and undertaking preliminary risk assessments.
  • Arranging client retainers and dealing with client queries.
  • Considering documents, preparing pre‑action letters and/or letters of complaint.
  • Litigation support including drafting of witness statements and assisting with disclosure reviews.
  • Dealing with client updates.
  • Arranging client award payments and matter billing.

The role will involve communication with clients via the telephone, video calls and email, therefore strong written skills and an empathetic manner are essential for this position. The individual will also have sound organisational, time management and negotiation skills as well as a good eye for detail. The ideal candidate will be IT literate with good interpersonal skills. The ability to work well in a team is essential along with a proactive approach and work ethic.

Required Experience/Skills

  • Law degree or equivalent with LPC desirable but not essential.
  • Personable and confident.
  • Team player.
