We're working with a well-established, heritage-rich manufacturer in West Cumbria to find an experienced Senior IT Engineer to join their close-knit team. This is a fully on-site role where you'll be the local IT lead, delivering responsive support to all users while collaborating with a knowledgeable IT Operations team based overseas.
The Role
You'll be the on-site IT lead, balancing day-to-day user support with involvement in infrastructure projects and working closely with the global IT team to maintain consistency across systems. Duties will include:
- Provide customer-facing IT support to all on-site users, managing requests via the service desk, phone, and email
- Support Microsoft operating systems, including Windows 11 and Windows Server 2016–2022, desktop applications, and end-user devices
- Assist the Overseas-based IT Operations team in maintaining on-site infrastructure, including physical hosts, virtual servers, switches, access points, SAN, firewall, routers, and phone systems
- Maintain and create documentation for the knowledge base, processes, and change requests
- Manage hardware and software asset registers, keeping everything accurate and up to date
- Oversee daily backup routines and ensure media is stored in approved locations
- Procure IT hardware, software, and services as required
- Arrange external technical support for issues that cannot be resolved in-house
- Some duties may occasionally be required outside of regular hours, compensated by time off in lieu
About You
You'll be a confident, practical IT professional who is comfortable working independently on site while collaborating remotely with a wider global team.
Required:
- Strong working knowledge of Microsoft technologies, including Active Directory, Group Policy, DHCP, and M365
- Experience in a 1st and 2nd line IT support environment, including support triage and escalation
- Degree/Qualification in Information Technology or a related field, or equivalent practical experience
- Excellent communication skills and a customer-first approach
- Strong problem-solving, organisational, and time management skills
Desirable:
- Experience as a Systems Administrator
- Familiarity with VMware vSphere, Citrix VDI, or Microsoft Hybrid environments (Exchange and Azure Entra)
- Experience with BigFix, CyberArk Identity, or WorkspaceONE for MDM
- Knowledge of Cisco Meraki, HPE Proliant, HPE Alletra SAN, or Cisco Catalyst switching
- Experience with MS SQL Server or Tape Infrastructure
