A leading infrastructure consultancy is looking to appoint a Principal Environmental Consultant to join its growing team. This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced environmental professional to take a lead role on major infrastructure and highways projects, supporting environmental strategy, EIA delivery, sustainability initiatives, and stakeholder engagement across complex programmes.

The role offers the opportunity to influence projects from design through to delivery while helping shape environmental best practice across a national portfolio.

The role

  • Provide technical leadership across environmental assessment, compliance, sustainability, and planning activities, working closely with clients, engineers, regulators, and project teams to deliver successful project outcomes.

Key responsibilities

  • Lead Environmental Impact Assessment (EIA) activities across infrastructure projects.
  • Provide environmental and sustainability advice throughout project lifecycles.
  • Coordinate internal specialists, external consultants, and stakeholder inputs.
  • Support carbon reduction, biodiversity, climate resilience, and nature-based solutions.
  • Manage environmental risks, consents, and planning requirements.
  • Oversee project budgets, programmes, resources, and commercial performance.
  • Mentor and support junior team members while contributing to team development.
  • Build strong relationships with clients, regulators, and key stakeholders.

Requirements

  • Degree qualified in Environmental Science, Environmental Management, Ecology, Geography, or a related discipline.
  • Chartered Environmentalist (or equivalent professional accreditation).
  • Strong consultancy experience within infrastructure, highways, construction, or the built environment.
  • In-depth understanding of EIA processes, planning legislation, and environmental assessment methodologies.
  • Experience delivering environmental and sustainability inputs on complex projects.
  • Excellent report writing, stakeholder management, and project leadership skills.
  • Full UK driving licence.
