Location: Stockport, Greater Manchester
Company: Four Corners
Job Type: Permanent
Working Arrangements: Four days office-based, one day working from home
Salary: Competitive, dependent on experience
Are you a housing lawyer who would rather be in the thick of the work than advising from the sidelines?
Four Corners is a growing residential property business, and we are looking for an experienced housing and tenancy solicitor to be our first dedicated in-house legal hire. You will take on the day-to-day legal work across our portfolio, with rent arrears and possession at the heart of it, and help us lay the foundations of a proper legal function.
This is a practical, get-stuck-in role. You will handle your own caseload, work alongside our operational teams, and bring the foresight to spot wider legal issues across the business before they become problems.
About Four Corners
We create homes and neighbourhoods that work for the everyday people who live in them. We are in an exciting period of growth, strengthening our operations and putting the right foundations in place for the long term.
Our values are simple: stay grounded, use your judgement, own it and play the long game. They shape how we work, make decisions and support one another.
The Role
Housing and tenancy law will be the main focus of your work. You will work closely with our Finance Director, COO and operational teams, giving clear, timely advice and managing most matters yourself rather than sending them out. You will use external advisers only where specialist support adds real value.
What You’ll Be Doing
Rent arrears and possession
- Manage arrears cases from the first missed payment through to possession, working with our operational teams on the right approach at each stage.
- Prepare and serve Section 8 notices, issue possession claims and run proceedings through the county court, including attending hearings where appropriate.
- Advise on pre-action steps, arrears correspondence, payment arrangements and escalation.
- Help build effective, compliant arrears management processes, and train colleagues to apply them consistently.
Housing and tenancy law
- Oversee tenancy agreements, notices and related documentation, making sure they are compliant and consistently used.
- Handle rent tribunal challenges, disrepair claims and tenancy disputes.
- Keep the business up to date with, and prepared for, the Renters’ Rights Act, the Housing Act 1988 and other relevant legislation.
- Oversee tenancy deposit protection compliance.
Wider legal and compliance matters
- Act as our internal data protection lead, covering GDPR compliance, subject access requests, breaches and ICO matters.
- Handle escalated complaints and engagement with redress schemes and ombudsman services.
- Review and negotiate commercial contracts, and give practical employment law support to managers.
- Support corporate governance, statutory filings and company secretarial requirements, with help from external advisers where needed.
Building the legal function
- Create the templates, policies, guidance and processes that a growing business needs.
- Manage the legal budget and instruct external advisers, making sure we get good value.
- Help shape how the function grows. As the business expands, there may be scope to bring in support and build a team.
What We’re Looking For
Essential
- A qualified solicitor or lawyer with at least three years’ post-qualification experience.
- Solid, hands-on experience in residential housing and tenancy law, ideally including landlord-side work.
- Proven experience of rent arrears recovery, Section 8 possession proceedings, rent tribunal challenges and disrepair claims.
- Working knowledge of GDPR and data protection compliance.
- Working knowledge of employment law and commercial contracts.
- The confidence to manage your own caseload and give clear, practical advice to non-lawyers.
The person
- You take ownership and enjoy seeing a case through from start to finish.
- You are comfortable working independently and juggling competing priorities.
- You are pragmatic and look for workable solutions rather than unnecessary complexity.
- You balance legal risk, cost and commercial reality.
- You work well with colleagues across different teams.
- You can see the bigger picture and are excited by the chance to help build something.
Experience in mergers and acquisitions or forward funding contracts is not needed.
Why Join Four Corners?
- Real ownership: your own caseload, with the trust to run it.
- A varied workload: specialist housing work alongside broader commercial and governance matters.
- The chance to build: set up the processes, templates and ways of working for our first in-house legal function.
- Visibility: work closely with the people making decisions.
- A supportive culture: a down-to-earth business where good judgement and initiative are valued.
- Flexible working: four days in our Stockport office and one day from home, with reduced-hours arrangements also considered.
