Clinical Pharmacy is part of an exciting programme to develop a new model of care, which addresses our ambition to deliver person-centred, co-ordinated care across the place; utilising the role of pharmacy within primary care to pro-actively help patients stay safe and well to reduce the demands on general practice. Pharmacy Technicians play an important role, complementing Clinical Pharmacists, Community Pharmacists and other members of the PCN multi-disciplinary team. Pharmacy Technicians work under supervision of the Clinical Pharmacists and the Head of Medicines Management GP to ensure effective and safe usage of medicines.

Main duties of the job:

  • Pharmacy technicians core role responsibilities will cover clinical, technical, educational and administrative categories.
  • All Pharmacy Technicians must work within their competencies and have professional indemnity for their role.

Job responsibilities:

  • Clinical: Review patients with shared-care decisions for effective medication use.
  • Support medication reviews, reconciliation and synchronising medications.
  • Review clinic letters and action any changes and ensure any monitoring/concerns are raised.
  • Participate in clinical audits and annual DMARD / other drug monitoring.
  • Resolve queries from Community Pharmacies, multidisciplinary team and patients.
  • Undertake face to face/telephone clinics as required.
  • Engage in Quality Outcome Framework (QOF), Locally Commissioned services (LCS), Medicine Optimisation Incentive Scheme (MOIS) and Antimicrobial Stewardship (AMS).
  • Technical and Administrative: Support the multi-disciplinary team to ensure efficient medicines optimisation processes.
  • Develop relationships with other pharmacy professionals and members of the multi-disciplinary team to support integration.
  • Support in reviewing and developing practice policies for CQC requirements.

Personal and Professional Development:

  • Work with your line manager and clinical supervisor(s) to engage in ongoing personal and professional development.
  • Attend training on revisions to information systems or changes in protocols for the inputting of data in the light of local and national initiatives.
  • Adhere to organisational policies, including confidentiality, safeguarding, information governance, and health and safety.
  • Work with your clinical supervisor to access regular clinical supervision, to enable you to discuss challenges and seek advice.
  • Demonstrate an understanding of current educational policies relevant to working areas of practice and keep up to date with relevant clinical practice.

Person Specification:

  • Experience: Completion of GPHC recognised Pharmacy Technician training.
  • GPHC registration.
  • Confident and polite.
  • Motivated and able to motivate others.
  • Forward thinker.
  • Experience of working with the general public.
  • Experience of working in a health care setting.
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral).
  • Clear, polite telephone manner.
  • Effective time management (Planning & Organising).

  • Ability to support implementation of policies and procedures.

  • Completion of CPPE Primary care pharmacy education pathway (PCPEP).
  • Experience in working in Primary care settings.
