What difference will you make?

Our trustees play a vital role in helping us stay focused, ambitious and sustainable as an organisation. By joining the board, you’ll help shape strategic decisions that directly affect how we support families and young children. Your skills and perspective will contribute to strong governance, clearer planning and better use of limited resources — all of which ultimately improve outcomes for children in their early years.

As a small charity operating in a complex and uncertain funding environment, strong trusteeship makes a real difference. Trustees help ensure that we:

  • Make informed, values-led strategic choices
  • Remain financially resilient and well-governed
  • Grow in a sustainable and proportionate way
  • Respond effectively to opportunities and challenges

Your involvement will help us move confidently into the next phase of our work, building on our track record while adapting to new demands and opportunities. Because we are small, the impact of your contribution will be visible and meaningful — your voice will be heard, and your input will matter.

Most importantly, this role supports our core mission ensuring that all children grow up in learning-rich home environments that lay the foundations for lifelong development, wellbeing and educational success.

What are we looking for?

We’re looking for trustees who are thoughtful, committed and willing to get involved at a strategic level. We’re particularly interested in people who bring:

  • Experience or expertise in areas such as strategy, marketing/comms, fundraising, finance or business planning
  • The ability to think strategically and see the bigger picture
  • Good judgement and a willingness to ask constructive questions
  • An interest in good governance and responsible leadership

Personal qualities we value highly include:

  • Commitment to our mission and values
  • A collaborative, supportive approach
  • Confidence to both support and challenge appropriately
  • Reliability and willingness to prepare for and attend meetings

You don’t need previous trustee experience, and you don’t need to be an early years specialist. What matters most is that you care about improving outcomes for children and families, and want to use your skills to make a positive difference.

What will you be doing?

We’re a small but ambitious charity working with families of babies and young children to strengthen the home learning environment and improve long-term outcomes for children. As we look ahead to the next 10 years of our work, we’re seeking new trustees to join our board and help shape the future of the organisation. We’re particularly keen to hear from people with skills and experience in one or more of the following areas (though this list is not exclusive):

  • Business planning and strategy
  • Marketing and communications
  • Fundraising, bid writing or corporate partnerships
  • Charity finance or financial management

As a trustee, you will:

  • Help develop the strategic direction of the charity at a critical point in our development
  • Help ensure the organisation is well-run, financially sustainable and mission-focused
  • Use your skills and experience to support informed decision-making
  • Act as a critical friend to the CEO and senior leadership

Our board meets four times a year, at times agreed to suit trustees, and meetings are purposeful and well-prepared. In addition, trustees are encouraged to take part in one sub-group or area of focus, aligned with their skills or interests (for example finance, fundraising or communications). You’ll work closely with our CEO and fellow trustees in a supportive, collaborative environment. As a small organisation, trustees can really see — and feel — the impact of their input. This is a hands-on strategic role rather than a distant oversight position.

You don’t need previous trustee experience. We value thoughtful challenge, good judgement, curiosity, and a genuine commitment to improving outcomes for children and families.

The recruitment process will include an informal conversation/interview with the CEO and one of our current trustees. We aim to make the process welcoming, transparent and human.
