Finance Assistant in Manchester

We’re a growing football retailer and community built specifically around the women’s game, bringing together shirts, merchandise, players, clubs and fans from across the world of women’s football.

As the business continues to grow across retail, e-commerce and partnerships, the finance function behind it needs to grow too.

We’re now looking for a part-qualified Finance Assistant to join the team and take ownership of the day-to-day finances of the business.

About the role

This is a brilliant opportunity for someone early in their finance career who wants more than a role where they’re responsible for one tiny part of the accounts process.

Working directly with our CEO and alongside our outsourced accountancy partner, you’ll get exposure across the finance function, from sales and purchase ledger through to payroll, VAT, cash flow and month-end.

You’ll be trusted to take ownership of your area, keep our financial information accurate and up to date, and spot things that need attention before somebody has to ask.

We’re growing quickly, so we need someone who is comfortable getting stuck in, asking questions and figuring things out.

• What you’ll be doing
• Raise customer invoices and credit notes
• Monitor outstanding balances and proactively manage credit control
• Resolve customer account queries and discrepancies
• Keep clear records of outstanding debts and regularly update the CEO
• Have confident and professional conversations with customers when payments need chasing
• Processing and recording supplier invoices
• Preparing supplier payments in line with agreed terms
• Investigating discrepancies and outstanding items
• Building good relationships with our key suppliers

You’ll also take ownership of supplier credits, making sure returns, rebates, credit notes and other adjustments are properly reconciled and identifying any outstanding money owed back to Foudys.

• Payroll & expenses
• Support the people side of finance too.
• Prepare and process payroll, manage employee expenses and maintain accurate records for starters, leavers and contractual changes.
• Support with pensions and employment administration, including preparing employment contracts and associated documentation.
• VAT & compliance
• You’ll prepare our VAT returns and make sure we have accurate supporting records in place.
• Where something doesn’t look right, you’ll investigate it, and for more complex accounting or VAT queries you’ll work alongside our outsourced accountants to get them resolved.
• Cash flow

This is where the role becomes particularly important to the wider business.

• You’ll maintain our cash-flow forecast and give the CEO a clear picture of what’s coming in, what’s going out and what financial commitments are ahead.
• We want someone who can spot potential pressures or risks early and raise them, rather than simply reporting what has already happened.
• Month-end & year-end
• Working alongside our outsourced accountancy partner, you’ll help make sure everything is ready for monthly management accounts and year-end.
• You’ll complete reconciliations, prepare supporting information, respond to queries and help investigate anything that doesn’t add up.
• Over time, you’ll develop a really strong understanding of how Foudys is performing financially and help provide the information the wider business needs to make good commercial decisions.

About you

We’re looking for someone who is part-qualified or currently studying towards a finance qualification , such as AAT, ACCA, CIMA or ACA.

You don’t need to have done absolutely everything on this list already. What matters is that you have a solid grounding in finance and you’re ready to take on more responsibility.

We’d love to meet someone who

• Has hands-on experience with sales and/or purchase ledger
• Understands the basics of payroll and VAT
• Is comfortable with reconciliations and enjoys getting to the bottom of discrepancies
• Has some exposure to month-end processes
• Is confident using accounting software and Excel
• Has excellent attention to detail
• Can manage deadlines without needing to be constantly chased
• Is comfortable picking up the phone to customers or suppliers when something needs resolving
• Takes ownership and follows things through
• Is commercially curious and wants to understand what the numbers actually mean for the business
• Is comfortable working in a growing company where things can move quickly

Most importantly, we want someone proactive.
