I’m working with one of the fastest‑growing retailers in the UK. They’re building their IT support function in‑house for the first time, moving away from external support to create a dedicated IT team supporting 120+ colleagues across the business. This is a fantastic opportunity to be one of the founding members of their IT function and genuinely shape the role as it evolves.

The Role

As their first dedicated IT Support Technician, you’ll work closely with the Technology Manager to deliver excellent IT services across the business.

Your day‑to‑day will include:

  • Responding to and resolving 1st line IT incidents, problems and requests
  • Password resets, login issues and account management
  • Setting up new starters with hardware and user accounts (onboarding/offboarding processes)
  • Wi‑Fi troubleshooting, network connectivity and basic network support
  • Hardware setup, maintenance and troubleshooting across end‑user computing devices
  • Managing and resolving support tickets through the incident management system
  • Supporting cloud‑based systems including Microsoft 365 and SharePoint
  • Providing application support for their ERP system (NetSuite) and e‑commerce platforms
  • Assisting with rolling out updates and maintenance to applications and equipment
  • Supporting colleagues with training on systems and technology

This role is ideal for:

  • An IT support technician who isn’t seeing real progression at their current role
  • Someone transitioning into IT from a customer‑service or retail background
  • An apprentice ready for their next step up
  • Anyone who thrives in a fast‑paced, people‑focused environment
  • Excellent communication skills, supporting colleagues at all levels
  • Basic understanding of IT systems, troubleshooting and end‑user computing
  • Problem‑solving abilities and staying calm under pressure
  • Enthusiasm to learn and develop technical knowledge
  • Comfortable working in a dynamic, rapidly growing business

Nice to have:

  • Experience in e‑commerce or retail environments
  • Familiarity with cloud‑based systems (Microsoft 365, SharePoint)
  • Knowledge of ERP systems (NetSuite), warehouse management systems or e‑commerce platforms
  • Understanding of network devices (switches, routers, firewalls)
  • Awareness of IT and cyber‑security best practices

What’s in it for you?

  • Competitive salary up to £32,000 DOE
  • Performance‑based bonus
  • 25 days holiday + 8 bank holidays + your birthday off
  • Company pension
  • Life insurance
  • Enhanced maternity & paternity leave
  • Benefits platform
  • Free parking on‑site + free refreshments
  • Smart casual dress code
  • Be one of the first in‑house IT team members, help shape the function from the ground up
  • Work for a young, vibrant retailer with excellent company culture

How to prepare for a job interview at Forward Role Recruitment

✨Brush Up on Your Technical Skills

For an IT consulting role, be ready to demonstrate your technical prowess. You might face questions on systems integration, cloud technologies, or even troubleshooting specific software. If you have experience with tools like AWS, Azure, or even specific programming languages, make sure you can talk about them fluently.

✨Showcase Your Problem-Solving Approach

IT consulting is all about solving problems for clients. Think about how you can illustrate your approach to a past challenge using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). It's a great way to show how you tackle complex issues and come up with effective solutions.

✨Know the Business Impact of IT Solutions

When discussing your experiences, focus not just on the tech solutions you implemented, but also on their business impact. Employers want to see that you can connect IT with organisational goals. Prep examples that highlight how your tech contributions improved efficiency or reduced costs for past clients or projects.

✨Prepare for Behavioural Questions

Since IT consulting often involves teamwork and client interactions, expect behavioural questions that assess your interpersonal skills. Be prepared with examples that demonstrate your adaptability, communication skills, and how you handle client feedback. Before the interview, think of situations where you worked closely with clients to create effective IT strategies or changes.
