About the Sustainability Team

Our Sustainability Team works with industry, government, regulators, the research community and wider supply chain, to support an environmentally, socially and economically sustainable UK seafood sector.

We help drive improvements in sustainable seafood (wild capture and aquaculture) production and responsible sourcing, ensuring the seafood industry can thrive while protecting marine ecosystems and supporting coastal communities for future generations.

As a team and organisation, we come together throughout the year for face-to-face sessions, including our all-staff conference.

You may also be required to travel to attend other conferences, events or meetings as part of your role.

Job role, responsibilities and relationships

The main dimensions of the role are

This role manages the technical delivery, analysis and development of sustainability data-driven tools, and programmes that support the UK seafood sector and Seafish to improve sustainability performance.

The post holder is responsible for generating and applying robust evidence and analysis to support decision-making, including the development and application of sustainability metrics, carbon accounting approaches, and data visualisation tools.

• The role manages delivery of key sustainability work programmes, including:
• Ongoing development and technical delivery of the Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool (SCEPT), including methodology refinement, data interpretation, and industry application to support emissions reduction aligned with the UK’s 2050 Net Zero target.
• Technical management of Seafish’s corporate sustainability data, reporting, and performance monitoring, including Greening Government Commitments (GGC) reporting and implementation of sustainability reporting frameworks.
• Project management of a 2026–27 spatial mapping project on renewable marine fuel infrastructure, developing a UK-wide evidence base linking projected fuel demand with port infrastructure and future investment needs, producing both static and prototype interactive analytical outputs.

The role operates in technically complex areas including carbon accounting, life-cycle assessment, sustainability reporting, and spatial analysis, requiring the ability to interpret and translate complex data into actionable insights and clear outputs for both technical and non-technical audiences.

The post holder plays a key engagement role with a wide range of stakeholders, including seafood businesses, energy and sustainability specialists, researchers, data providers, and policy makers, using analytical outputs to inform and influence sector and policy decision-making.

The role provides line-management and direction to the Sustainability Officer, who supports delivery through coordination, data preparation, and operational delivery of programme activities.

Key accountabilities will be

• Under Seafish’s core ‘resilient supply chain” work pillar and reporting to the Head of Sustainability and Reporting:
• Manage delivery of defined elements of Seafish’s responsible sourcing and sustainability work programme, translating strategic priorities into practical delivery plans and outputs.
• Analyse sustainability, supply chain and sector data to generate insights, identify trends, and risks and inform improvements to responsible sourcing and sustainability initiatives.
• Play a key engagement role with seafood businesses and delivery partners within assigned work responsibilities, acting as a key point of contact to influence uptake of sustainable practices and support behaviour change.
• Coordinate and shape cross-functional delivery of sustainability projects, ensuring alignment between stakeholder activity, programme objectives, and Corporate Plan 2023–28 outcomes.
• Develop evidence-based briefings, guidance, and communications that translate technical sustainability issues into clear, actionable information for industry audiences.
• Seafood Carbon Emissions Profiling Tool (30%)
• Provide technical support, training and guidance to seafood businesses using the SCEPT.
• Provide day-to-day contact point on industry enquiries with our software provider Mérieux Nutri Sciences | Blonk.
• Work with stakeholders to collaboratively improve the quality, availability and consistency of their supply chain emissions data.
• Support ongoing development of the tool to ensure alignment with best practice in greenhouse gas accounting and life-cycle assessment, and to ensure the platform continues to meet industry’s needs.
• Develop case studies and training resources, together with delivering presentations, to support industry uptake.
• Analyse tool outputs and sector emissions data to generate insights for industry, policy and internal programmes.
• Identify, communicate and support practical emissions reduction opportunities across the seafood supply chain.
• Represent Seafish in relevant external forums, working groups and initiatives.
• Spatial mapping of renewable marine fuel infrastructure (up to 40% in 2026–27)
• Support delivery of spatial analysis linking seafood sector fuel demand with infrastructure availability.
• Identify geographic gaps and priority locations for infrastructure investment.
• Contribute to development of mapping outputs, including GIS-based analysis, static maps and a demonstrator interactive tool.
• Work with project partners, analysts and stakeholders to ensure outputs are robust and policy- and investment-relevant.
• Support communication of findings to government, industry and investors.

(Note: time allocation to this area, and reallocation to the other two key work programme areas, will be reviewed and agreed as part of annual objective setting following completion of the initial project phase in 2026-27.)

• Seafish corporate sustainability and GGC reporting (30%)
• Coordinate collection, validation and analysis of corporate sustainability data (e. g. emissions, energy, water, travel and waste).
• Maintain and improve internal data systems to ensure accurate and consistent reporting.
• Support preparation of quarterly and annual Greening Government Commitments returns to Defra.
• Monitor and report progress against Seafish’s sustainability strategy and targets.
• Identify opportunities to improve environmental performance through data-driven insights.
• Work across Seafish teams to embed sustainability into organisational culture and processes.
• Support internal engagement and awareness of sustainability initiatives.

Line manage the Sustainability Officer, including performance management, workload allocation and development support.

The successful candidate will be able to

• Escalates issues where there is a significant risk to the organisation, finances or reputation.

Essential working relationships will include

• Seafood businesses across the supply chain, including fishing, aquaculture, processing and retail.
• Sustainability and energy experts, researchers and technical specialists.
• Government departments, regulators and policy makers.
• Internal Seafish teams to support delivery of corporate and industry priorities; in particular Finance; Levy; Kingfisher; and Economics.
• The role requires effective communication with audiences ranging from technical specialists to senior decision-makers.
• Knowledge, skills and experience required

To be a suitable candidate for this role you should have

• A degree in a relevant discipline (e. g. environmental science, environmental management, energy/carbon management, or data/analytical disciplines with sustainability application, or similar).
• Renewable marine fuel knowledge covering production, storage and distribution of fuels such as hydrogen, ammonia, and e-fuels.
• Experience developing interactive mapping tools and data visualisation platforms to translate complex datasets into decision-ready insights.
• Experience in the overlapping areas of sustainability analysis, carbon accounting, environmental data management or life-cycle assessment.
• Experience working with greenhouse gas emissions data and carbon / sustainability reporting frameworks. Understanding of greenhouse gas accounting principles and standards.
• Strong analytical skills, including experience working with complex datasets.

Energy systems analysis and techno-economic modelling to assess supply–demand alignment and infrastructure feasibility.

• Excellent written and verbal communication skills, and experience producing technical reports and guidance materials.
• Experience engaging with stakeholders and supporting adoption of tools or methodologies.
• Proven project management expertise and ability to deliver across multiple projects, to the required quality, on budget and on time.
• Proficiency in Microsoft Excel, Access, Word and familiarity with data management and collaboration tools (e. g. Share Point, Microsoft Teams).

Experience of the following would be advantageous

• (Working towards) full / chartered membership of an appropriate professional body (e. g. Institute of Sustainability and Environmental Professionals, or Institute of Energy.)
• Experience with environmental or sustainability data systems and geospatial energy system modelling (e. g. Geographic Information Systems.)
• Familiarity with Greening Government Commitments or similar sustainability, or ESG (environmental, social and governance) reporting frameworks.
• Experience in seafood supply chains, food systems or natural resource sectors.
• Experience delivering training or technical support for tools or platforms.
• A relevant postgraduate qualification is also desirable.

Salary and benefits

All roles within Seafish are classified and have defined salary bands.

This role sits within Job Family C in our pay structure, and the starting salary is at £41,000.

A new member’s appointment on the pay structure is dependent on the experience they bring to the role when they start.

New candidates normally start at the lower end of the range unless they can demonstrate considerable experience in the requirements of the role.
