We are seeking an experienced and motivated Pre‐Assessment Nurse to join our Orthopaedic Outpatient Clinic. This is a key role supporting safe, effective, and patient‐centred care by ensuring patients are clinically optimised for orthopaedic surgery and procedures. You will work closely with consultants, anaesthetists, allied health professionals, and administrative teams to deliver high-quality pre‐operative assessment and preparation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct comprehensive pre‐operative assessments for orthopaedic patients, including medical history, physical assessments, and risk stratification.
  • Identify and escalate clinical risks, liaising with consultants, anaesthetists, and GPs as required.
  • Arrange and interpret investigations (e.g. blood tests, ECGs, MRSA screening) in line with protocols.
  • Provide patient education, advice, and reassurance regarding surgery, anaesthesia, and recovery.
  • Optimise patients for surgery, including management of long‐term conditions and lifestyle advice.
  • Maintain accurate and timely clinical documentation.
  • Contribute to service improvement, audits, and quality standards.
  • Ensure compliance with infection prevention, safeguarding, and governance requirements.

Required Qualifications

  • Registered Nurse with a current active NMC PIN.
  • A minimum of 2 years post‐registration experience in Hospital/NHS.
  • Ability to be flexible with a rota.
  • Able to work 4 night shifts per month.
  • Undertaken a relevant phlebotomy course and current clinical practice in this area.
  • Evidence of continuous professional development.
  • Relevant orthopaedic experience.
  • Good IT skills and ability to use clinical data systems.
  • Basic understanding of patient care issues in day surgery.
  • Be able to demonstrate knowledge of NMC professional code of conduct and its application.
  • Understanding of fundamentals of nursing care and ability to deliver a high standard of individualised care.
  • Up to date clinical skills.
  • Ability to work as part of a team and some experience of managing a small team.
  • Ability to work on own initiative and manage own workload.
