Position Overview
You have extensive expertise in pipeline engineering – particularly in natural gas pipeline design and bring extensive expertise in pipeline engineering. With a focus on leadership, innovation, and operational excellence, you collaborate effectively with stakeholders to ensure project execution aligns with business objectives and risk considerations. With everything you bring to the table, you’ll thrive as our Specialist Engineer, Pipelines.
In this role, you’ll act as the subject matter expert for pipeline design, providing strategic and tactical engineering guidance, overseeing design processes, and offering technical leadership to junior and intermediate engineers. You’ll also supervise external engineering resources and contribute to capital projects and operations support for FortisBC’s critical infrastructure.
In year 1, you will:
- Build foundational knowledge of FortisBC’s system assets, engineering standards, and operational procedures.
- Collaborate with internal stakeholders and external resources to support the creation and implementation of scope of work documents for pipeline engineering services for cost estimation, project schedules, detailed design, construction feasibility, and construction oversight.
- Provide technical guidance and design review support to junior and intermediate pipeline engineers, fostering knowledge transfer and engineering excellence.
In year 2, you will:
- Lead and develop company pipeline engineering standards and improve current processes based on field conditions and ongoing continuous improvement initiatives.
- Develop short- and long-term plans with executable goals for the FortisBC pipeline engineering team which will encompass improved standards, design processes, training and quality assurance.
- Engage internal stakeholders including Distribution and Transmission Operations, the Project Management Office and Training to ensure alignment on those short- and long-term plans.
What it takes:
- Bachelor’s degree from a recognized university in a relevant field (such as mechanical engineering, chemical engineering or civil engineering) plus twelve (12) years or more post-secondary experience in natural gas pipeline engineering.
- Extensive experience in producing detailed designs for high pressure natural gas pipelines, including relevant experience in active pipeline repairs, hot tapping, and upgrades.
- Demonstrated experience in design and construction oversight of trenchless installation methods for new pipelines.
- Experience in welding and inspection requirements for new and live line pipelines is considered an asset.
- Registration as a Professional Engineer with EGBC, or eligibility for registration as a Professional Engineer with EGBC is required.
- Strong understanding of design standards such as CSA Z662 and ASME B31.
- Proficient with Microsoft Office suite of programs (such as Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Teams and Outlook).
- Demonstrated ability to lead diverse, high-performing teams.
- Ability to adapt FortisBC’s strategic business plan and risk tolerance into department level goals and plans.
- Comprehensive understanding of working within a regulated utility with deep understanding of interconnectedness of FortisBC’s gas business.
- Ability to apply strategic thinking for short and long-term planning coupled with sound decision making in complex, rapidly evolving scenarios.
- Previously demonstrated dedication to safety.
- Self-motivated individual with exceptional creative thinking skills and a proactive approach for devising practical and economical solutions to technical problems with minimal direction.
- Demonstrated superior organizational skills and proven ability to manage multiple projects concurrently within scope and budget.
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills for working collaboratively with a team of engineers, field teams, management, third party resources/vendors and professionals to deliver desirable results in a high-paced and demanding environment.
- Valid BC driver’s license.
