Our Opportunity We have an exciting opportunity for a Hardware Engineering Manager to join a growing technology organisation based in the Birmingham area, a hub of advanced engineering and innovation.

Key Responsibilities

  • Define, plan, and manage the hardware development process to meet project requirements. Ensure adherence to company processes and engineering best practices.
  • Engineering Environment: Tailor the hardware engineering environment processes, tools, and standards to meet both company and project-specific needs.
  • Task Allocation & Leadership: Lead, mentor, and motivate a multidisciplinary hardware engineering team. Plan, prioritise, and allocate work effectively, balancing multiple project demands.
  • Architecture Definition & Specification: Contribute to system architecture development, hardware function allocation, and interface definition. Create electronics specifications, architectures, and verification plans.
  • Work Package & Bid Management: Occasionally act as Work Package Manager, preparing estimates, supporting bid activity, and offering consultancy on electronic solutions.
  • Technical Direction: Provide technical oversight, ensuring design risks are managed and issues resolved. Lead investigations, root cause analysis, and improvement initiatives.
  • Collaboration: Work closely with systems, software, and mechanical teams to develop optimal integrated solutions.
  • Team Development: Mentor junior engineers, review peer work, and drive continuous improvement initiatives within the electronics function. Conduct effective development discussions to enhance technical growth and career progression.

Essential Qualifications and Skills

  • Bachelors or Masters degree in Electronics or Electrical Engineering (or equivalent).
  • Proven track record in hardware design and engineering management within complex product environments.
  • Strong understanding of the hardware development lifecycle, from requirements through to validation.
  • Skilled in leading multidisciplinary teams to deliver against technical, cost, and schedule targets.
  • Expertise in electronics circuit design using schematic capture tools (e.g. Cadence, Mentor Graphics / Siemens, Altium).
  • Familiarity with full product lifecycle activities, from concept and bid to integration and qualification.
  • Confident communicator with strong leadership, planning, and influencing abilities.
  • Experience promoting innovation and implementing new tools, methods, or technologies within hardware engineering teams.
  • Strong background in technical documentation, process compliance, and cross-functional collaboration.
  • Desirable Attributes: Product knowledge in lasers, cameras, or optoelectronics.
  • Passion for continuous learning and staying abreast of electronics advancements.
  • Understanding of ISO9001-compliant engineering processes or equivalent frameworks (e.g. Chorus 2.0).
  • Level 6 qualification (BEng (Hons) Electronics or equivalent).
  • Experience working within Birmingham\’s thriving technology, defence, or manufacturing sectors is advantageous.
