About The Role As a Console Controller, you\’ll be responsible for the safe coordination and monitoring of all shipping movements within the Port. Your duties will include managing health and safety in line with legislation and company policy, operating the console for lock operations, maintaining shipping records, and ensuring effective communication and handovers. You\’ll also handle paperwork, provide fresh water to ships, and assist with mail and stores delivery. Key Responsibilities To ensure that the Harbour Office and lock side are manned, as per agreed standards. To monitor the safe transit of vessels within the Port complex, as per agreed procedures. Respond appropriately to general communications and to assist FTNS in any emergency affecting Leith. Manage health and safety in line with legislation and Company policy. Operate the console to ensure safe lock operations and maintain water levels within the port. Maintain shipping movement records, waste notifications and update IPOS. Prepare and issue the necessary paperwork for vessel arrival. Accurately and promptly record and report any defects or incidents in the lock gates e.g. damage to port property and/or vessel. Ensure all safety procedures are strictly followed at the lock gates, as per agreed procedures. Ensure lock side rope handlers are allocated their tasks and are carrying out their role properly and safely. Ensure an effective handover with the next shift and keep the log up to date. Advise the Harbour Master by phone, face-to-face or email of any non-routine occurrences. Provide fresh water to ships. Pick up and deliver mail, stores, etc. as required for the Dockhead. What are we looking for? We are seeking a flexible and dependable individual who is comfortable working on a shift rotation schedule. The ideal candidate will be computer literate, with a good working knowledge of Microsoft Office and other systems. While formal qualifications are desirable, they are not essential – what matters most is a willingness to learn and a commitment to undertaking relevant training. Basic knowledge of oil spill response techniques with appropriate training. Must be qualified to OPRC1. Understanding of freshwater procedures including sterilisation. In depth understanding of the running operation of lock-gates, sluices, penstocks and their associated controls, including the requirements for flood control. Good working knowledge of IPOS, Internet and email. Full driving licence. Full right to work in the UK.
