We are currently looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our Central Engineering team in the position of Project Design Engineer. Working within the Capital Projects Team within the Central Engineering Department, the role will provide support and drive to the early stages of Strategic and large Capital Projects from Concept through to the Planning stage as a vital member of a larger team and also taking whole responsibility for these stages within smaller projects.

The role will work within the framework of the Forterra Project Management System (FPMS) primarily within major projects, performing early stage “Concept” project formation to inform Executive decision making, detailed assessment of commercial bids and process analysis of different solutions to feed into the Capital application process within the “Feasibility” stage, and further support throughout the rest of the project stages.

In addition to the role supporting major projects, it is expected that the role will take the lead for these stages for Standard level projects (£500k-£5m), working within the structure of the FPMS to promote Best Practice methods in equipment and behavioural standards. The role will require close team working with each area within the Central Engineering team and also across all sites within the business, accurately and efficiently scoping Engineering requirements to capture all User Requirements. Reliably driving the early stages of projects to maximise the benefit to the business of the investments. The role will also support projects around the group which require specialist design, analysis or CAD skills.

Your duties would include but not limited to the following:

  • Organisational: Liaison with a number of cross functional teams to include commercial, engineering, operations, technical, marketing and innovation to accurately capture all User and Business requirements. Ability to organise, hold and lead cross-function meetings through clear requirements and drive to obtain clear outcomes on complex topics. Manage the relationship between various suppliers throughout Europe to ensure requirements and quotations are delivered on time.
  • Analysis: Create clear and concise User Requirement Specifications, alongside all supporting documentation, that provides potential suppliers with all necessary information required. Critically analyse current and future production layouts to ensure that all designs will integrate fully with existing environments and deliver the requirements. Compare and contrast different Supplier solutions to give a quantitative and qualitative analysis of the various options, using various methodologies. Create and deliver concise and informative presentation packs on the current status of projects and tenders to a variety of stakeholders around the business. Ensure that proper due diligence has been completed prior to projects progressed from gate to gate within the process.
  • Strategic: Work within the broader Forterra project and process stage gate process, ensuring Engineering standards are used throughout. Embrace a “blue sky” approach to future projects enabling a wide range of potential solutions to be considered. Support the Capital Engineering Manager in supporting the overall Capital Expenditure aims of the business. Work with the whole of the Central Engineering Team to identify and utilise opportunities to improve the overall process.

About You:

  • Previous experience of large projects (£1m+) within industrial environments, preferably within FMCG, Automotive or Heavy industry.
  • Demonstrable strong drive to meet targets and move projects forwards in challenging circumstances.
  • Experienced in preparing and implementing project plans across business segments.
  • Ability to produce executive reports to demonstrate project progress and advise on pinch points.
  • Confidence, composure and credibility to work with all levels of the business.
  • Ability to influence outcomes in multi-faceted and cross-functional projects.
  • Naturally inquisitive nature, able to challenge and push projects forwards.
  • Good problem-solving skills and ability to think strategically.
  • Ability to use numerical techniques to analyse existing and designed production environments.
  • Proactive, personable and self-motivated.
  • Ability to communicate effectively at all levels.
  • Degree level qualification in an Engineering discipline or similar level HND/time served experience in an Engineering environment.
  • 3+ years in delivering Capital Projects or administering tender processes for large projects within a Capital Environment.
  • High level of knowledge using MS Excel to model processes.
  • Proficiency with CAD, knowledge of 2D AutoCAD preferred.
  • Full Driving licence required.

Advantageous:

  • Previous experience in Heavy Clay and/or similar Discrete & Process manufacturing environments.
  • Experience in Discrete Event Simulation advantageous.
