We are currently looking for an enthusiastic individual to join our Hams Hall team in the position of Mechanical Chargehand. Working within a multidisciplinary maintenance team, you will play a key role in ensuring the smooth and efficient operation of our site’s plant and equipment.
Your responsibilities will include leading a team of technicians to support monitoring, modification, and management of the plant’s mechanical equipment and facilities, carrying out preventative maintenance, responding to breakdowns, developing and implementing facility improvements, and assisting with installations of new equipment during weekly maintenance windows or plant shutdowns. A major part of the role will be to develop the performance and capabilities of the mechanical technicians and to institutionalise the CMMS within their operational roles.
Your duties would include but not be limited to the following:
- Plan, co-ordinate and manage all site maintenance activities, safely and within agreed budget.
- Ensure that all engineering contractors and suppliers engaged on engineering/maintenance tasks are compliant with SHEQ expectations.
- Control and manage maintenance activities using preventative measures to minimise downtime, ensure rapid response to breakdowns, and follow up with corrective actions.
- Collaborate fully with the electrical/control maintenance team.
- Work with the site’s process/production teams.
- Provide hands-on support during breakdowns or periods of poor facility performance.
- Lead and coordinate mechanical breakdown activities as necessary.
- Conduct post-failure fault diagnosis, root cause analysis, and introduce irreversible countermeasures.
- Identify and lead performance improvement activities for the facility, departments, and individuals.
- Develop the CMMS to improve work planning, data collection, analysis, performance management, and technician interventions.
- Support CAPEX applications and project delivery.
- Ensure site assets are operated efficiently and maintained to a high standard.
- Manage and develop the mechanical technicians through personal development plans and coaching.
- Understand financial budgets, control spending, and oversee stores and stock control.
- Participate actively in daily feedback reviews and support insurance inspections.
- Manage and control the tackle store according to Forterra standards.
- Commit to personal development to meet evolving role demands.
About You:
- Engineering and maintenance background.
- Minimum 3 years supervisory experience in an engineering/maintenance role.
- Relevant plant or sector experience is advantageous.
- Formal supervisory training is advantageous.
- Strong communication skills and ability to develop good relationships at all levels.
- Effective resource management skills.
- Strong problem-solving and prioritization skills.
- Recognized mechanical trade qualification.
- Formal supervisory qualification and/or relevant experience with a proven track record.
