We are currently seeking an experienced, industry proven and commercially astute Board Director to contribute to the strategic leadership of the organisation. The role will support the Board in shaping long-term strategy while ensuring that major contracts, partnerships and growth initiatives align with the organisation’s strategic intent and risk appetite. This is a hand’s on Director position, integrating and working as part of the team is key.
The successful candidate will bring deep sector insight, proven professional engineering capability, strong commercial acumen and experience ensuring the company delivers sustainable growth, robust risk management and strong shareholder value within the evolving energy market.
Key Accountabilities:
- Be legally responsible for promoting the company’s success, complying with the Companies Act 2006, and ensuring accurate statutory filings with Companies House, including annual accounts, confirmation statements, and director information.
- Provide strategic guidance on the development and execution of the organisation’s long-term strategy and growth ambitions within the energy sector.
- Work collaboratively with fellow Board members and the leadership team to ensure effective strategic decision-making and growth planning.
- Attend and actively contribute to Board meetings covering major projects, financial performance, risk oversight, and key strategic decisions.
- Monitor organisational performance against agreed strategic objectives and KPIs.
- Provide Board-level oversight and evaluation of short-term and long-term financial performance and metrics.
- Ensure Board decisions support sustainable growth and long-term shareholder value.
- Provide professional engineering capability to all Clients and stakeholders to ensure that engineering excellence and quality is maintained at all times.
- Provide and promote innovation and new ways for working to ensure value and efficiencies are provided to our projects, clients and stakeholders.
- Support business development by engaging with clients on strategic opportunities and partnerships.
- Evaluate commercial opportunities, market threats, exposure to risk, and emerging industry trends relevant to the organisation.
- Contribute independent insight and constructive challenge to support the development and refinement of company strategy.
- Maintain oversight of market changes and dynamics affecting the organisation.
- Promote a strong culture of safety, operational & engineering excellence, and environmental responsibility across the organisation.
- Ensure appropriate systems and controls are in place to manage health, safety, environmental, and quality risks and to maintain compliance with applicable regulations.
Preferable:
- Minimum of 4 years’ experience in a director-level role.
Essential:
- Incorporated or Chartered Engineer.
- At least 7 years’ experience in the utility, pipeline, or related sectors.
- Significant senior leadership experience, with a proven track record of building and leading high-performing teams.
- Engineering or relevant science / technology-based degree.
- Proven engineering capability that can deliver consultancy to clients and technically support projects and others within the business.
- Extensive project management experience and capabilities, demonstrating the management of multiple concurrent engineering projects, with first-hand knowledge of administering NEC4 contracts.
- Strong financial and commercial acumen within the utilities or energy sectors.
- Demonstrable experience managing delivering large-scale business development or financial growth.
- Proven experience in securing high-value contractual partnerships and leading negotiations to achieve optimal outcomes for the organisation and its shareholders.
- Exceptional communication, negotiation, and interpersonal skills across all organisational levels, including employees, managers, and Board members.
- High emotional intelligence and agility to navigate changing situations and complex stakeholder environments; proven ability to build, influence, and maintain high-value strategic relationships.
- Leadership experience in creating an open, accountable, and performance-focused culture that enables internal teams and project partners to deliver and succeed.
- Commercial expertise in evaluating risk versus reward and implementing bid and negotiation strategies aligned with strategic priorities, shareholder requirements, and market conditions.
- Strong understanding of the energy sector, infrastructure development, and relevant regulatory frameworks and compliance.
- Proven capability to recruit, develop, and manage direct and indirect talent and a flexible workforce across multiple projects.
