Role Overview
Mechanical Design Manager – Mechanical Engineering & Design team (FRO project). Reports to the Head of Mechanical Engineering & Design. Lead a multidisciplinary team to design, develop and support bespoke mechanical solutions.
Main Duties and Responsibilities
- Lead and mentor a mechanical design team, ensuring a high‑quality first‑class product portfolio.
- Own all aspects of mechanical engineering and product design from requirements capture through to testing, deployment and support.
- Maintain project alignment with business interests, budgets and schedules, managing projects >2 years and >£1 million.
- Provide regular progress updates to senior management and manage group budgets, forecasting and budget proposals.
- Coordinate travel, requests and changes for the team.
- Research new technologies, processes and tools; identify future product opportunities.
- Offer guidance, mentoring and support on both technical and non‑technical subjects.

Qualifications and Experience
- Qualification in Mechanical Engineering and Product Design.
- People management qualification or similar technical discipline.
- CEng status with IMechE or IED preferred.
- Previous team‑management experience and proven technical decision making.
- Strong background in mechanical design, CAD/CAE/FEA tools.
- Experience from concept through testing and deployment of mechanical systems.
- Desirable: Managing budgets, forecasting, supplier and contractor relationships; leading large high‑profile projects.
Knowledge & Skills
- Excellent interpersonal, communication and negotiation skills.
- Strong planning, prioritisation and multitasking abilities.
- Expertise in PTC CREO, WindChill PDMLink, FEA and manufacturing processes (CNC, fabrication, extrusion, vacuum forming).
- Deep knowledge of materials (aluminium, plastics, H/C composites) and BS8888.
