McLaren Racing is seeking a sustainability engineer for a 12‑month placement focused on the Circular F1 Car programme and sustainability data initiatives. The role is based at the McLaren Technology Centre in Woking and requires flexibility to support cross‑functional projects across manufacturing, research and commercial teams.

Principal Accountabilities

  • Circular F1 Car programme
    • Support the Circular Economy Specialist with delivery and impact tracking of circularity improvement projects across Design, Production, R&D and Car Build teams.
    • Conduct material flow mapping to trace material waste through the factory and to end‑of‑life via the waste supply chain.
    • Research circularity initiatives across material use, factory processes and recycling opportunities.
    • Track supply‑chain environmental impacts and support supplier engagement.
  • Environmental data and insights
    • Provide high‑quality data and actionable insights for the Circularity Metric and GHG footprint, establishing automation where possible.
    • Liaise with stakeholders across McLaren Racing to identify and collect environmental data.
    • Clean, aggregate, format, analyse and visualise data to support reporting and respond to ad‑hoc requests.
    • Support GHG audit and assurance.

Job requirements

Knowledge, skills and experience

  • Essential
    • Keen interest in environmental sustainability and its application in engineering, design and production.
    • An appetite to pick up technical knowledge quickly.
    • Understanding of environmental considerations and impacts in manufacturing, operations and factory processes.
    • Relevant training or qualifications in mechanical engineering, manufacturing, material science or design (completed or in progress).
    • Proficiency with data management and analysis software, at least Excel; Python experience highly desirable.
    • Experience working with large, complex data sets.
    • Strong interpersonal and relationship‑management skills.
    • Clear communication skills, able to explain complex information to non‑technical stakeholders.
  • Desirable
    • Foundational knowledge of environmental topics such as climate science and waste management.
    • Knowledge of environmental assessment and management techniques such as carbon accounting and life‑cycle assessment.
    • Proficiency with advanced data tools such as Alteryx, Google BigQuery, Power BI and AI tools.
