We have an exciting opportunity for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join us on an FTC basis for 9 months, working in our Biggin Hill Head Office to work on new product development from initial brief, and handover the final product.
The Research & Development group are looking to place a dynamic and creative individual who can make a strong contribution to our mechanical engineering team and design activities. In return for a fresh, alternative and innovative approach to our designs, the successful applicant will experience a fast-paced stimulating engineering environment.
You will work on new product development from initial brief, generating design specifications, producing conceptual designs, participating in team design reviews, and going on to complete the detail engineering package, produce manufacturing drawings, produce and procure a bill of materials, issue an assembly package, oversee production, and handover the final product, sometimes within months, weeks or even days.
You will also experience working on existing products and systems. The candidate will be given a range of projects over the year and have support from a mentor throughout this time with us. Our placement students will also have the opportunity to familiarise themselves with prototyping, 3D printing (in-house), create high-resolution concept visuals and generate artwork as and when required. Training for all tools and applications used at Formula One will be provided.
Main Duties and Responsibilities:
- Participate in the design, development and production of high quality, innovative, reliable mechanical solutions with an aesthetic bias (including appropriate documentation).
- Carrying out 3D modelling & 2D design/draught work whilst maintaining updating and modifying existing designs/diagrams.
- Carry out full cycle project/task work, through conception, design, development, prototyping, testing, diagnosing, manufacture and commissioning.
- Decompose complex problems and produce simple and effective solutions.
- To complete all mandatory training within specified timelines.
- To operate safely at all times in line with Company health and safety requirements.
- To undertake other duties within your capabilities as your Department Manager or Team Manager may assign to you from time to time.
Key Knowledge and Skills to be considered for the role:
- Understanding of DFMA (Design for Manufacture and Assembly).
- Hands on practical skills with good understanding, sense of aesthetics and ergonomics.
- Ability to carry out hands on tasks in the workshop under the supervision of mechanical technicians. This will involve the assembly of prototypes and small volume production runs.
- Communication, analytical and problem solving skills, with the ability to evaluate, report and communicate effectively.
