Job Summary: Community Midwife, 22.5 hours per week, Permanent

Main duties

  • Be responsible for a caseload of women and be part of the on-call system to provide care to women opting for a home birth.
  • Work to provide continuity of care throughout pregnancy, labour and postpartum, in both community and hospital settings as needed.
  • Maintain clinical skills and knowledge to provide individualised, evidence-based midwifery care, as reflected in the Scope of Professional Practice.
  • Develop and review policies and standards for safe use of equipment; assist in planning and implementing programmes of parent education.
  • Ensure adherence to policies for drug storage, administration and record keeping; advocate for women and provide information and support services.
  • Communicate effectively to promote open and trusting relationships; be aware of equipment safety and handling.
  • Participate in on-call and rotation allocations as required.
  • Be part of the team contributing to George Eliot’s Strategic Plan, ensuring choice, access and continuity of care in a safe service.

Job Description — Responsibilities

  • To be able to work in all areas of midwifery practice according to service needs.
  • To work as an autonomous practitioner within the community and hospital setting, recognising any medical, obstetric or neonatal problems and referring to the appropriate medical support.
  • Participate in a community rota and in the 24-hour on-call system as required by rotation allocation.
  • Develop and maintain clinical skills and knowledge to provide individualised, clinically effective, evidence-based midwifery care, and be competent in midwifery-led care, neonatal and adult resuscitation, supporting women labouring and giving birth in water, and supporting breastfeeding in line with policy; perineal repair; interpreting cardiotocograph recordings.
  • Work in partnership with the midwifery team and managers; report problems/concerns related to clinical practice.
  • Ensure policies and procedures for drug storage, administration and record keeping are adhered to.
  • Provide excellent, evidence-based care for women and families; act as an advocate with information and support services.
  • Communicate effectively, promoting open and trusting relationships; be aware of equipment safety and handling.
  • Assist in the development and review of policies and standards for safe equipment use and any new equipment introduced to the team.
  • Participate in planning and delivering parent education for women and their partners.
  • Be aware of George Eliot’s Strategic Plan and contribute to change management to ensure choice, access and continuity of care in a safe service.

Person Specification

Essential — Experience and Knowledge

  • Good level of post-registration experience including experience in relevant clinical environments
  • Recent experience managing care of women in antenatal, intrapartum and postnatal periods
  • Participation in patient education programmes
  • Experience of midwife-led care in the community

Desirable — Experience

  • Caring for women choosing to labour and give birth in water
  • Experience in research and audit
  • Knowledge of safeguarding children procedures

Essential — Qualifications

  • Registered midwife
  • Ongoing CPD linked to clinical competencies
  • Assessing and Mentoring or Practice Assessor qualification or willingness to work towards

Desirable — Qualifications

  • NVQ Assessors course
  • Possession of a relevant degree or studying towards it
