The predicted salary is between 31200 - 46800 ÂŁ per year.

The role can be based in Northern Research Station, Roslin, Midlothian EH25 9SY or in Alice Holt, Farnham, Surrey GU10 4LH or Forestry Commission Office, Bristol, BS16 1EJ or Wales Research Unit Bangor, Gwynedd LL57 2UW with blended working which gives you the option to work some of the week from home, and some of the week from the workplace. Please be aware that this role can only be worked in the UK and not overseas.

The Climate Change Research Group works to improve understanding of the impact of climate change on forest function, the role forestry can have in mitigating greenhouse gas emissions and climate change, and how forest management can adapt to reduce the impact of climate change. The research activity covers a spectrum from more fundamental measurements, through developing methods and tools, undertaking practical action and demonstration, and providing advice and evidence to underpin policy. We have external collaborations in the UK and internationally.

The FR wind risk team is a world leader in the field, and has been central to research into wind and tree interactions and windthrow modelling, with involvement or leadership in a range of UK, European and wider international projects. The team produced the innovative ForestGALES decision support tool that is now the industry standard to manage wind risk across the UK and world-wide. Further development of ForestGALES is a priority to improve forest management in relation to changing climate and silviculture, and involves modelling based on the latest data from field-based research.

Job Description

The post holder will be a key team member, contributing to a range of wind-risk projects. They will further develop the ForestGALES model in R to incorporate the latest science, including the effects of tree acclimation to wind climate under modern silvicultural approaches. They will support the forest industry in managing wind risk, by making the latest versions of ForestGALES available through R-Shiny. They will deliver results of spatial analyses through systems including R and QGIS. They will collaborate in international projects that include wind risk assessments, and will contribute to FR’s business development by participating in, or leading, new funding bids.

Key Work Areas:

  • Develop ForestGALES in R for a range of silvicultural options, using forest stand data from remote sensing, and tree biomechanics data from FR experiments.
  • Run wind risk scenarios and simulations using forest monitoring and growth data, with wind data derived from e.g. the GlobalWindAtlas, climate change projections, and the wind energy standard WAsP airflow model.
  • Lead a project to make ForestGALES available on the internet in its latest version, using R-Shiny.
  • Support the wind risk team in planning and implementing field research campaigns to quantify the impacts of wind climate on tree development and biomechanical characteristics.
  • Be responsible for maintaining quality assurance of experimental data and model development.
  • Contribute to the impact of the team by writing project reports and scientific papers.
  • Contribute to business development by leading or contributing to collaborative funding bids.
  • Liaise with colleagues to develop realistic work schedules; carefully plan and monitor time allocation across projects.
  • Keep up to date with major developments in the field of wind risk and forest modelling, and spatial data integration.
  • Represent the team in UK and international meetings and conferences.

Person specification

Essential Criteria:

  • A Higher degree (MSc/PhD) in a relevant subject.
  • Demonstrated experience of forestry or land-use research, with a focus on wind risk preferred.
  • Proficiency in modelling using R, including spatial analysis.
  • Skilled communicator, adept at tailoring language and presentation to engage diverse audiences, including stakeholders, customers, and scientists.
  • Willingness to travel regularly and participate in field work (approximately every 6-8 weeks) including nights away from home.

Desirable Criteria:

  • Experience of using ForestGALES for research applications.
  • Proficiency in using and presenting results within GIS platforms, ideally R, QGIS, and/or ArcGIS.
  • Hands-on experience in forestry fieldwork and data analysis.
  • Skilled in developing R-Shiny apps to enhance model accessibility for a diverse user base.
  • Experience in collaborating on code development with GitHub or similar platforms.
  • Established track record of publishing in peer-reviewed scientific journals.
