Your role with us

The Information and Digital Directorate (IDD) is responsible for delivering our ambition to make the FCDO the world’s most technologically integrated and innovative foreign ministry. This means harnessing digital, data, technology, IT security and information management to deliver our diplomatic, development and consular aims, all while keeping our people and information safe, especially from hostile actors.

Main purpose of the job

When you join us as a Senior Developer you’ll lead on the development of a wide range of new digital products that will transform how our organisation operates. We’re currently going through an exciting period of transformation, and you’ll play a key role in shaping our overall approach to product delivery as you work across a portfolio of digital products and services, including tools that assist diplomats in our overseas embassies. We design and build these products in‑house using a multi-disciplinary, full‑stack development team, and it will be your task to write clean, secure code that is open by default and easy for others to reuse.

Leveraging the professional capability framework to enhance your skills, you’ll ensure the delivery of high-quality digital solutions that meet our organisation's strategic needs. Your ultimate aim will be to develop and implement robust software solutions, foster continuous improvement, collaborate across disciplines, promote Agile and Lean practices, ensure compliance and security, and drive innovation.

We have two main development stacks within the directorate – the first of these focuses on Programme Delivery, and uses the following:

  • Developer Platform: .Net and .Net Framework
  • IDE: Visual Studio
  • Version Control: Git
  • Sprint management and release pipelines: Azure DevOps
  • Database: SQL Server
  • We also utilise Playwright for end-to-end testing

The second stack involves the building of a new Power Platform Centre of Excellence, and here we’re looking for developers with experience in the design, code, test and documenting of Power Platform solutions of medium-to-high complexity using Power Apps, Power Automate, Power BI and Dataverse.

Who we’re looking for

To be a success with us you should have the skills to design, develop, test and document high‑quality software of medium to high complexity, following agreed standards, secure coding practice and modern development methods. Committed to applying good systems design principles such as Clean Architecture and SOLID, and contributing to the maintenance of consistent architectural and coding standards, you’ll work effectively in Agile teams, delivering sprint goals, producing shippable outcomes and supporting a culture of continuous improvement.

Capable of writing robust, reusable, well‑tested code, ensuring adherence to standards, unit testing expectations and definition‑of‑done criteria, you should have a strong focus on user needs, and the skills to communicate complex concepts clearly to non‑technical audiences. You’ll also be expected to use your confident communication skills to coach and mentor your less experienced colleagues, and build positive and effective relationships with stakeholders from a diverse range of backgrounds.

The work we do is international, diverse and highly collaborative, and when you join us you’ll enjoy the support of an integrated delivery environment, access to tailored learning and development, and the opportunity to travel to our UK and overseas offices to support product development.
