We are looking for an experienced Mechanical Fitter to carry out maintenance, repair, and overhaul work on freight wagons. This role involves mechanical inspection, component replacement, and ensuring all wagons meet required safety and operational standards.
Location: Barton Under Needwood. Training in Doncaster until pass competencies. Claim back £0.30 per mile while on training.
Job Type: Contract for 6 months with possibility for permanent work. Hourly rates: Skilled rate is £18.79. Hours of work: Monday to Thursday. 9.25 hours a day. 37 hours a week.
Qualification: Level 3 in engineering discipline for skilled rate.
Key Responsibilities- Perform routine maintenance, servicing, and overhaul of freight wagons.
- Tasks could include mechanical fitting, inspection, repair brakes, suspension, wheelsets, couplings, and underframe components.
- Working on mechanical and complete repairs to a high standard.
- Replace worn parts including brake blocks, bearings, seals, and pipework.
- Carry out tests and checks.
- Read and interpret engineering drawings and maintenance documentation.
- Complete job cards and maintenance records accurately.
- Work safely in line with industry regulations and site procedures.
- Mechanical engineering background (rail, HGV, plant, automotive, or similar).
- Experience working on heavy mechanical equipment, mechanical fitting or wagons (preferred).
- Confident using hand and power tools.
- Strong fault finding and diagnostic skills.
- NVQ Level 3 in mechanical engineering or equivalent (preferred).
- Ability to work to deadlines and follow maintenance schedules.
- Safety focused with strong attention to detail.
- Reliable, proactive, and able to work independently or within a team.
- Flexible approach to overtime when required.
