About the Role
We are currently recruiting for a Fitter / Electrician to join a busy Heavy Maintenance team in Bristol. This role is responsible for carrying out the maintenance, overhaul, and repair of rail vehicles in line with company procedures, engineering standards, and safety requirements. The successful candidate will play a key role in ensuring rolling stock reliability and availability targets are achieved, while supporting continuous improvements in safety, quality, and operational efficiency.
Key Responsibilities
- Carry out maintenance and overhaul activities on rail vehicles to agreed standards and timescales
- Complete work as allocated by the Team Leader or Heavy Maintenance Manager
- Operate and move rail vehicles within depot operating limits where authorised
- Adhere to all safety procedures, VMIs, local instructions, and relevant operational documentation
- Ensure worksheets and maintenance documentation are completed accurately and signed off promptly
- Follow all quality, environmental, and engineering procedures at all times
- Attend technical, safety, quality, and operational briefings and take appropriate action where required
- Support Safety Critical Work Regulations assessments under Team Leader guidance
- Maintain high housekeeping and cleanliness standards across the depot
- Use PPE in accordance with company standards and local instructions
- Assist in achieving rolling stock availability and reliability targets
- Carry out additional duties within competency level as requested by management
- Maintain compliance with all company policies and procedures
Qualifications
- NVQ Level 3 in Engineering (Rail Traction & Rolling Stock preferred)
- City & Guilds qualification in Engineering
- BTEC qualification in Engineering desirable
- Good standard of general education
- Driver Operator/Shunter assessment in relevant vehicle class desirable
Skills & Experience
- Previous experience within rail vehicle heavy maintenance environments
- Understanding of depot operations and rolling stock maintenance practices
- Ability to interpret engineering drawings and technical information
- Good understanding of mechanical and electrical engineering principles
- Knowledge of health, safety, and environmental standards
- Awareness of production efficiency and continuous improvement techniques
