Three skilled Lathe & Press Operatives required to join a leading Rolling Stock Company as they enter an exciting phase of growth based at their brand‑new facility in Manchester. This is a rare opportunity to work with state‑of‑the‑art equipment, contribute to a major operational expansion, and build a long-term career with a global engineering leader.

The Role

As a Press & Lathe Operative, you will work across two Press machines and one Lathe machine, supporting the mounting, dismounting, and reprofiling of train wheelsets and bogies. You’ll play a key role in ensuring operational efficiency by being able to operate both machine types and providing cover for colleagues during leave or sickness. Full OEM training will be provided on the new machinery. During the early phases of setup, you may also support wider workshop tasks, including manual handling, to ensure smooth operations as the facility ramps up. This position is ideal for someone who is proactive, adaptable, and eager to grow within a business that is investing heavily in new capabilities and long-term workforce development.

Key Responsibilities

  • Operate Press and Lathe machines to mount/dismount wheels and reprofile wheelsets and bogies
  • Maintain high standards of accuracy, working to tight tolerances
  • Support operational efficiency by being multi-skilled across both machine types
  • Assist with additional workshop duties during quieter machine periods
  • Uphold safety, quality, and engineering best practices at all times

What We’re Looking For

To secure an interview, candidates must meet the following criteria:

  • Experience operating Lathe machinery within an engineering environment (rail experience beneficial but not essential)
  • NVQ Level 3 in machining or engineering, or equivalent time-served experience
  • Ability to pass a rail industry Medical and Drug & Alcohol test
  • Strong appreciation for precision measurement and working to tight tolerances
  • Flexible, adaptable, proactive, and confident taking on new challenges
