An experienced Mechanical Design Engineer is required to join a leading rail engineering and infrastructure organisation that is continuing to invest in its Engineering Design capability. This Senior Mechanical Design Engineer will play a key role in the design, development, testing and validation of specialist railway maintenance and infrastructure equipment used across the UK rail network. The successful individual will become a technical specialist within the organisation, supporting both the enhancement of an established product portfolio and the development of innovative new engineering solutions.
Working within a collaborative engineering environment, the role will involve partnering with engineering teams across multiple UK locations to deliver products that operate safely and effectively within a highly regulated, safety-critical industry. This is a cradle-to-grave engineering position, offering involvement from concept design and feasibility studies through to manufacture, verification, validation and product approval.

The Role
As Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will be responsible for designing, developing and integrating robust mechanical systems for specialist rail infrastructure equipment. Working closely with the Head of Mechanical Engineering and wider engineering teams, you will support projects from concept through to implementation, ensuring products meet engineering standards, operational requirements and rail industry compliance obligations. You will utilise engineering principles across mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems while supporting validation activities, product testing and continuous improvement initiatives.
Location
The successful candidate can be based from any of the following locations: Doncaster, Crewe, Southport, Stockport.
Working Arrangement
Hybrid working, minimum of 3 days per week on-site, occasional travel to other engineering locations, including Coventry.
Salary
£44,000 - £48,000 per annum.
Essential Criteria
- Mechanical Design Engineering experience within a safety-critical or highly regulated industry.
- Strong understanding of mechanical design principles.
- Experience designing systems involving hydraulics and pneumatics.
- Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering or a recognised engineering apprenticeship/time-served background.
- Knowledge, understanding or exposure to FEA principles.
- Chassis Fabrication design.
- Autodesk Inventor experience or strong SolidWorks experience with willingness to transition to Autodesk Inventor.
Desirable Criteria
- Rail industry experience.
- Knowledge of Network Rail standards.
- Understanding of PAB and NoBo approval processes.
- Experience with Yellow Plant or rail infrastructure equipment.
- Electrical knowledge including solenoids, emergency stop systems, PLC-controlled equipment.
- Experience working within a product development environment.
