This is a rare opportunity to build a brand-new technical function from the ground up, with genuine authority over reliability strategy, condition monitoring, and maintenance quality.

A UK freight and logistics operator is investing in the next generation of Reliability-Centred Maintenance (RCM) and remote condition monitoring across its locomotive fleet. The Client are creating a new Technical Engineering team at a flagship heavy maintenance depot. As Technical Engineering Manager, you will lead this team and take full ownership of the organisation’s RCM systems turning live data into actionable intelligence that drives safer, smarter, and more reliable maintenance.

Reporting into the Fleet leadership team, this role sits at the intersection of engineering strategy, quality improvement, and operational delivery. This role offers the chance to truly make it your own.

You will:

  • Be the technical authority for RCM and condition-based maintenance.
  • Own and evolve the RCM / remote condition monitoring systems across the locomotive fleet.
  • Use trend analysis and live performance data to prevent in-service failures before they occur.
  • Influence long-term reliability improvements by working closely with Engineering and Maintenance teams.
  • Lead and develop a team of technical engineers and fitters, building investigation and diagnostic capability.
  • Drive technical investigations into failures, defects, and incidents — producing detailed reports that create learning, not blame.
  • Develop fault-finding guides for Maintenance, Operations, and Drivers to reduce downtime and improve first-time fixes.
  • Champion maintenance quality, continuous improvement, and engineering excellence.
  • Act as a safety influencer, embedding safe systems of work while constantly looking for better, smarter ways of working.
  • Provide second-line engineering support as part of an on-call rota.
