Foodsteps is hiring a 1 year fixed term full stack software engineer to join our team!

About Foodsteps

We are a food sustainability start‑up with a mission to help food businesses measure, reduce and communicate their environmental impact. Food systems account for around a third of global greenhouse gas emissions and are the leading driver of biodiversity loss, so immediate positive change in this area is crucial if we are to avoid catastrophic consequences from the ecological crisis.

Our Product

Our platform allows clients to analyse the environmental impact of their food. Clients give us data about the products they buy, manufacture and sell, including key attributes such as where they source the ingredients from, their production steps, transportation and waste streams, etc. We use that information to calculate the environmental impacts of their foods throughout the entire life cycle, helping our customers make their food offering more sustainable. Our product is built around PostgreSQL, an impact calculation engine (in Python and Rust), a Django backend (using typed Python), and a React (Typescript) frontend. We use AWS for our infrastructure and Figma for our user interface designs.

In this role you will be working directly on product initiatives that make a real difference to our customers' food sustainability journey and directly contribute to the Foodstep's mission.

The Role

As a full stack software engineer you will be part of the technical design, implementation, testing, release and support of our application. You will be working closely with our small team of in house software engineers, product manager and product designer. You will work in fortnightly sprints and release to production several times a sprint. Working very closely with teams across the company, you will enjoy working as part of a broader cross‑functional team.

What we are looking for

  • Experience with Python is essential.
  • Experience with the rest of our stack (Rust, Django, React, Typescript, SQL, or AWS) is a bonus, but we are happy to support you in learning these on the job.
  • Experience building, testing and releasing software as part of a team.
  • A desire to work as part of a small team where every initiative makes a difference to achieving our goals.
  • You enjoy learning new technologies and are comfortable adapting as our product and team evolve.

Salary, Location and Benefits

  • Full range of benefits, including 27 paid holiday days, flexible working, and climate perks travel days.
  • 0.8 - 1.0 FTE considered (e.g. full time, 4 days a week, 9 day fortnight).
  • 1 year fixed term with the possibility to extend.
  • UK‑based, able to visit our London office at least once a month.
  • Quarterly team days.

Our Team and Workplace

We are a UK‑based company with an office space in London. We support onsite, hybrid (2-3 days in our London office) and fully remote working setups within the UK, with the expectation that fully remote team members visit the London office at least once a month for key team events. We are currently a team of about 30 people.
