An opportunity has arisen for a laboratory technician to work in our rapidly growing research and development department focused on microbiome modulation and bacterial control through the application of CRISPR and other molecular technologies using our patented Guided Biotics™ platform at FOLIUM\’s Bristol Laboratories. The position is based at Science Creates, Old Market Incubator in the heart of Bristol but may require occasional work at Bristol Veterinary School, Langford on an ad hoc basis.
This position is primarily a laboratory maintenance and office admin role, with the possibility to develop skills within scientific research / quality assurance in the longer-term future.
Your role is to support experimental work to develop Guided Biotics™ delivery systems:
Proactively support FOLIUM as a dynamic and fast-growing company.
- Assist team members in highly innovative and novel R&D.
- Work effectively in a vibrant team atmosphere to deliver experiments and projects that are well designed and executed.
- Undertake further training as part of Folium’s continuous development programme to acquire and master skills and techniques in microbiology and molecular biology.
- Apply standard laboratory techniques and procedures; good microbiological laboratory practice; use of general lab equipment; microbial culture.
- Ensure health and safety standards are met.
Routine duties will consist of:
- Preparation of media, lab solutions and basic reagents.
- Monitoring and purchasing laboratory stock, sourcing materials from new suppliers as required.
- Liaising with scientists to ensure resources are supplied to suit ongoing project timelines, prioritising your workload as required.
- Cleaning and maintain equipment as part of upkeeping a clean and productive workspace, ensuring criteria of our QC lab maintenance schedule is met.
- Processing laboratory waste correctly, a duty which will involve communicating with external staff at Science Creates.
- Carry out a variety of assays following Standard Operating Procedures.
- Mediate communication between our financial team and external organisation accounts managers.
As part of the training and personal development programme you may progress to:
- Assist with assays to support scientific projects that will underpin the goals of the company; including processing animal samples, DNA extractions, PCR.
- Develop new QA/QC documentation and in house processes.
- Contribute to the preparation and quality control testing of product candidates and materials for use in in-vivo studies. Undertake research in novel areas that could open new avenues for the company to venture into.
- Contribute to the development of new or improved methods and/or techniques and be trained to use relevant equipment and technologies (e.g. Microscopy / qPCR / NGS etc).
What are we looking for?

Previous experience with some microbiology and molecular biology techniques advantageous, but by no means essential.
Proficiency in Microsoft Office (Word, Excel, Outlook) and other relevant software.
Experience in an admin/finance/supply chain/stock handling role could be beneficial.
