Focus Group is a £300m-revenue, 1,400-person technology services company backed by Hg Capital. Following our $1bn valuation in 2024, we're scaling rapidly and investing in AI to transform how we operate and how we serve our 30,000 SME customers.

Our Presales team provides technical solutions to new and existing customers across networking, cloud and server infrastructure, and cyber resilience - mainly built around Microsoft 365 and Azure.

As an IT and Cyber Presales Consultant, you'll be the technical expert throughout the sales process, working directly with clients to define requirements, design solutions and present them with confidence. You'll act as subject matter expert across a broad slice of our product range, helping us build Focus Group into a Presales centre of excellence within the MSP/MSSP sector.

What you'll do:

  • Provide technical support throughout the sales cycle, from first conversation to close.
  • Run discovery calls, workshops and technical assessments with customers.
  • Design technically robust, commercially sound solutions, fully validated before they go to the customer.
  • Present solutions confidently, articulating business value and cost savings.
  • Own technical documentation: designs, network diagrams, statements of work.
  • Lead or co-lead RFP responses, with compelling technical and commercial proposals.
  • Work with technical specialists and delivery teams to ensure a smooth transition into delivery.

What we're looking for:

  • A proven track record in a presales, consultancy or technical advisory role, ideally built within an MSP or managed security services environment.
  • Genuine breadth across the Microsoft stack: Microsoft 365 and Modern Workplace, endpoint management (Intune, Autopilot), Microsoft Identity, Microsoft Defender and Azure.
  • Solid working knowledge of MDR/EDR, networking (LAN, WAN, SDWAN, WiFi), servers and storage, firewall technologies, and Cyber Essentials/CE+.
  • Relevant Microsoft accreditations that back up your hands-on knowledge.
  • Skilled at running a discovery call from limited information and coming away with what you need to scope a solution properly.
  • Experience writing proposals and statements of work customers can act on without a follow-up call to clarify detail.
  • Comfortable leading or co-leading an RFP response under time pressure across a wide range of products, not just one specialism.

Nice to have:

  • Cloudflare One, Zero Trust technologies, compliance frameworks, or SOC services experience.

How to prepare for a job interview at Focus Group

Brush Up on Your Technical Skills

For an IT consulting role, be ready to demonstrate your technical prowess. You might face questions on systems integration, cloud technologies, or even troubleshooting specific software. If you have experience with tools like AWS, Azure, or even specific programming languages, make sure you can talk about them fluently.

Showcase Your Problem-Solving Approach

IT consulting is all about solving problems for clients. Think about how you can illustrate your approach to a past challenge using the STAR method (Situation, Task, Action, Result). It's a great way to show how you tackle complex issues and come up with effective solutions.

Know the Business Impact of IT Solutions

When discussing your experiences, focus not just on the tech solutions you implemented, but also on their business impact. Employers want to see that you can connect IT with organisational goals. Prep examples that highlight how your tech contributions improved efficiency or reduced costs for past clients or projects.

Prepare for Behavioural Questions

Since IT consulting often involves teamwork and client interactions, expect behavioural questions that assess your interpersonal skills. Be prepared with examples that demonstrate your adaptability, communication skills, and how you handle client feedback. Before the interview, think of situations where you worked closely with clients to create effective IT strategies or changes.
