An exciting opportunity has arisen for a Maintenance Engineer to join a leading food manufacturing business based in Bishop’s Stortford. This role is responsible for ensuring the safe, compliant and efficient operation of site equipment by delivering both planned preventative maintenance and reactive engineering support across production, utilities and facilities. A key focus of the role will be valve maintenance and equipment reliability, alongside supporting continuous improvement initiatives and new machinery projects within a fast-paced manufacturing environment.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Deliver planned preventative maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance across manufacturing equipment, utilities and site facilities.
  • Diagnose and resolve mechanical and electrical faults, minimising downtime and supporting continuous production.
  • Ensure all engineering work complies with GMP, Health & Safety and company standards.
  • Perform preventative and corrective maintenance on manual and automated process valves across water, air, CIP and product lines.
  • Troubleshoot recurring faults, conduct root cause analysis and implement long-term reliability improvements.
  • Monitor system performance to prevent leaks, contamination risks and pressure failures.
  • Support continuous improvement initiatives and the introduction of new machinery to improve safety, hygiene, quality and operational performance.
  • Proactively recommend improvements to increase plant efficiency and reduce unplanned downtime.
  • Maintain accurate engineering logs and maintenance records.
  • Support the management of spare parts inventory.
  • Work closely with production teams, engineering colleagues and external contractors to ensure safe and effective working practices.

Skills & Experience:

  • Minimum 3 years’ engineering experience within FMCG or a similar manufacturing environment.
  • Multi-skilled engineer with strong mechanical and/or electrical fault-finding ability.
  • Proven experience responding to equipment breakdowns and carrying out root cause analysis.
  • Experience working within a highly regulated industry.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to work both independently and as part of a team.
  • Comfortable working under pressure within a fast-paced production environment.
  • Computer literate with experience using MS Office and CMMS systems.

Qualifications:

  • Engineering qualification to NVQ Level 3 or equivalent in an Electrical or Mechanical discipline.
  • Recognised engineering apprenticeship preferred.
  • Electrical regulations certification desirable.
  • Health & Safety / Basic Food Hygiene training advantageous.
  • Experience working in chilled or frozen environments beneficial.
