Are you ready to trade your job for a journey? Become a FlyMate! Passion, excitement & global collaboration are all core to what it means to be a FlyMate. At Flywire, we’re on a mission to deliver the world’s most important and complex payments. We use our Flywire Advantage — the combination of our next‑gen payments platform, proprietary payment network and vertical‑specific software — to help our clients get paid, and help their customers pay with ease — no matter where they are in the world.
Who we are: Flywire is a global payments enablement and software company, founded a decade ago to solve high‑stakes, high‑value payments in education, using modern technology. Today, we’ve digitized payments for more than 3,300 global clients across education, healthcare, travel & B2B, covering more than 240 countries and territories and supporting over 140 currencies. With over 1,000 FlyMates representing more than 40 nationalities in 14 offices worldwide, we’re looking for FlyMates to join the next stage of our journey.
The Opportunity: Flywire is seeking a strategic and execution‑oriented Payments Director, Cards & APMs to spearhead our global acquiring partnerships and Alternative Payment Method (APM) expansion. As the face of Flywire to our global acquirers, you will act as a bridge between market‑leading payment providers and our internal stakeholders. You will solve complex, large‑scale payment challenges by deepening our embedded payments value proposition across multiple business models. Reporting to the VP, Payments Network (Cards & APMs), you will play a pivotal role in ensuring Flywire remains at the forefront of global payment innovation.
Key Responsibilities
- Strategic Network Management: Own and optimize Flywire’s global acquiring footprint, managing complex setups including 3DS, tokenization, and local acquiring strategies.
- Performance Optimization: Drive our processing strategy by balancing global redundancy and cost‑efficiency to maximize authorization rates.
- APM Expansion: Drive our global APM expansion, ensuring we have the right mix of local payment methods that serve our payers.
- Product Implementation: Develop and refine key processing capabilities Flywire needs to be set up for success, including defining our 3DS strategies and implementations to ensure seamless, secure transactions.
- Relationship Leadership: Manage day‑to‑day relationships and lead quarterly business reviews with existing acquirers across Europe and the UK.
- Growth & Negotiation: Identify, evaluate, and onboard new acquirers to meet business objectives; lead end‑to‑end contract negotiations to ensure favorable commercial terms.
- Market Intelligence: Serve as the subject matter expert on market trends and regulatory changes, collaborating with Legal, Compliance, and Product teams to pivot strategy as needed.
- Cross‑Functional Collaboration: Partner with Operations, Pricing, Product, and Marketing to monitor performance analytics and execute new global initiatives.
Qualifications
- A seasoned payments expert with a deep understanding of the global card ecosystem and APM landscape. Experience managing global card‑acquiring partnerships for high‑volume merchants ($1B+ GTV) is highly preferred.
- A strategic thinker who understands the nuances and tradeoffs balancing authorization rates, tokenization, 3DS strategies, and payment costs. Deep technical knowledge of 3DS 2.0, network tokenization, and strategies for reducing interchange/scheme fees is essential.
- A payments specialist who is equally excited to present our payments strategy to executives as you are to dig into a transaction to understand why it’s not processing as expected.
- Analytically minded, using data to drive recommendations for cost optimization and performance improvements.
- Strong familiarity with local payment methods such as iDEAL, Klarna, PayPal, bank transfers, wallets, and regional preferences.
- A master communicator capable of representing Flywire to external partners and translating complex technical needs for internal teams.
- A proactive problem‑solver who thrives in a fast‑paced environment — whether your background is in merchant‑side, PSP, or a technical account‑management role.
