The Principal Enterprise Architect will help define and implement architecture strategies that support Flutter's growth objectives whilst operating within a federated operating model. This position requires balancing centralised governance and standards with the flexibility to address the unique needs of individual brands, regions and divisions. The role is centred firmly within our global Tech Edge strategy aiming to power the growth of our brands by identifying and implementing opportunities for sharing, automating and securing technology.

The role will lead and shape the forward view of technology across Flutter's Global ecosystem and will work in partnership with key business and technology stakeholders to seek innovative solutions, promote reuse, optimise our sharing models and integration patterns to ensure the Technology function can deliver our ambitious strategy. This role provides extensive technical strategic advice and guidance to senior leadership teams to create and implement new technology platforms and will include mentoring, coaching and sometimes leading other architects and technical leaders.

Key areas of focus for this role:

  • To help create and leverage FlutterEdge, our shared platforms and products – to empower our brands. Partnering with Product and Commercial teams this requires a forward-thinking strategy expertise and mindset.
  • Play a leading role in our global technology integration and transformation programs, including supporting our acquisition diligence and integrations and accelerating Edge brand integrations through promoting sharing models such as inner source and as-a-service.
  • Establishing collaboration alignment and architectural maturity across our global technology community via Communities of practice and Global Design Council.
  • Provide expert technology consultancy across the group that informs and enables Flutter Edge value to be realised.
  • Support the evaluation of technology systems and platforms during M&A due diligence creating the integration roadmap and management of key technology risks.

What you’ll do:

  • Strategic Leadership: Develop and maintain a forward-thinking architecture strategy aligned with the organisation's objectives prioritising scalability, performance and compliance.
  • Serve as a trusted advisor across Flutter group providing insights into existing and emerging technologies such as cloud computing, artificial intelligence and automation.
  • Ensure the architecture aligns with the organisational goals and supports both centralised and decentralised (federated) operating models.
  • Develop and mature enterprise architecture capabilities and processes at Flutter including but not limited to:
  • Development and evolution of Capability Models.
  • Create and agree a consistent and accessible set of Business and Technology capability definitions.
  • Capability mapping - the association of capabilities to each other and the applications and processes that fulfil - through which a better understanding of our technical landscape and component and service responsibilities can be obtained.
  • Develop a Capability Maturity Model / Assessment framework and comparison with objectives - to identify areas for reuse focus or uplift.
  • Ensure these activities form part of our wider values streams across Flutter Functions feeding into Flutter Group transformation programmes etc. to deliver value and to drive fact-based decisions.
  • Flutter Edge: Working closely with product Architecture and colleagues within Global Platform Architecture define the overall architecture vision and reference architecture for Flutter.
  • Develop architecture standards that promote interoperability, modularity and scalability.
  • Specifically maintain, advocate and provide consultancy for Flutter Edge PLUG integration patterns that enable brands/divisions to accelerate integration with Flutter Edge services.
  • Enable innovation and collaboration through the implementation of sharing models including:
    • Sharing Models:
    • Inner source: Foster a culture of collaboration by enabling teams to share reusable platforms, code libraries and frameworks across the organisation.
    • As-a-Service: Develop and promote modular API-driven patterns and approaches for services that promote re-use and ease of adoption.
  • Mergers and Acquisitions (M&A): Help develop integration strategies and roadmaps to align acquired entities architecture ensuring continuity in operations and compliance.
  • Governance Assurance and Collaboration: Promote the adoption of shared services, reusable code and inner source practices to optimise costs, increase development velocity and reduce duplication.
  • Act as a liaison between global and local teams to ensure alignment with enterprise priorities.
  • In consultation with the Director of Architecture and wider team lead the development and refinement of the architecture governance and assurance processes and structures to ensure business outcome alignment and improve quality of deliverables.
  • Work with the wider CIO Architecture Community to ensure alignment, best practice processes and ways of working.
  • Innovation and Continuous Improvement:

    • Evaluate and recommend emerging technologies to drive efficiency, innovation and competitive advantage.
    • Advocate the adoption of automation and DevOps practices to improve development and deployment efficiency across teams.

    Team Leadership:

    • Foster a culture of collaboration, innovation and accountability across teams.
    • Lead by example and serve as a role model on key topics such as responsible gambling, sustainability and DEI.

    What you’ll need:

    • Experience of operating in a senior architecture role within a fast-paced online/eCommerce organisation. Comfortable operating, presenting and influencing at C-suite level.
    • Excellent understanding and appreciation of the technology market, latest trends and ways of working.
    • An excellent relationship builder and motivator who will thrive on working closely with internal teams and across a diverse group structure.
    • Experience of Enterprise Architecture modelling and mapping techniques as well as architecture tooling such as LeanIX.
    • Excellent ability to co-ordinate multiple stakeholders' requirements and priorities whilst working to exacting deadlines.
    • Fluent in technology architecture best practice, can set standards, implement the right processes and forums to set the function up for success.
    • Sees and lives architecture as an enabler of business value, not as purely a governance function.
    • Knowledge of Flutter's global technology ecosystem and our player facing products.
    • Strong analysis, problem resolution, judgment and decision-making skills.
    • Excellent communication, interpersonal and organisational skills with an ability to simplify complex problems or solutions in a way that is easy to understand for a non-technical audience.
    • Understanding of portfolio and demand management.
