Scottish indie publisher Floris Books is recruiting for a part‑time Junior Designer to join our Design & Production department of five people. Our innovative team publishes stunning illustrated children’s fiction and non-fiction titles, and specialist non-fiction for adults.

Our ideal candidate will have an eye for design, page layout, typography and illustration, and a head for project management. They’ll be a conscientious team player and a good communicator, with the design skills to execute the team’s shared vision for our books under the supervision of the Art & Production Director.

Your main responsibilities will be:

• project management of books from manuscript to preparing
• print-ready files (reprints and new books)
• typesetting/page design
• artworking (image editing)
• producing concepts for and designing both fiction and non-fiction covers
• writing print specifications
• preparing files for eBook conversion (via our supplier)

Floris Books recognises the lack of diversity within the publishing industry, and we especially welcome applicants from under‑represented backgrounds. You do not need to have had previous experience in children’s/book publishing; a demonstrable interest in publishing will suffice.

We are looking for someone with the following:

• a portfolio showing strong design and typographic skills
• proficiency in Adobe InDesign and Photoshop (we use CS6 for PC)
• excellent written, spoken and visual communication
• excellent administrative and organisational skills for managing schedules and juggling deadlines
• great attention to detail
• a proactive, curious and problem‑solving attitude

Non‑essential but beneficial experience:

• formal training in graphic design
• children’s/illustrated/general book publishing
• writing print specifications
• preparing PDF files for print

Key information:

• This is a part‑time position – 22.5 hours (3 days) per week – with an initial 12‑month contract.
• 28 days paid holiday, plus 4 at Christmas, including statutory days
• Contributory pension scheme
• The ideal start date is January 2027
• The role has a full‑time equivalent salary of £27,000, pro‑rate at 60%
• First round interviews (online): w/c 2nd November

We operate hybrid working conditions. Initially the successful candidate will be physically in our Edinburgh office 3 days per week; that will shift to a hybrid format when it is deemed suitable. Please note that the office is reached by a flight of stairs and is not wheelchair‑accessible.
