We are recruiting for a Mechanical Design Engineer to join our Mechanical Design Engineering team in Fareham. This role is ideally suited to a motivated engineer who is eager to take ownership of meaningful design challenges and grow within a high-performing team. For the right candidate, we are open to appointing at Senior Mechanical Design Engineer level.

As a Mechanical Design Engineer, you will contribute to the mechanical design of products and subsystems throughout the full development lifecycle, creating high-quality and manufacturable solutions that meet functional, performance and regulatory requirements. As a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer, you will take full ownership of mechanical design activities from initial concept through to high-volume manufacture, making informed and complex design decisions that shape the final product.

Key Duties and Responsibilities
  • Develop mechanical components and subsystems across the full product lifecycle.
  • Identify and evaluate technologies and solutions to meet functional and performance requirements.
  • Produce robust mechanical designs aligned with project goals.
  • Create 3D CAD models and 2D manufacturing drawings.
  • Apply best-practice engineering tools including simulation, DFMEA, Design for Manufacture and GD&T.
  • Prepare and execute verification and validation test plans, including hands-on prototyping, testing and analysis.
  • Manage design activities to meet project deadlines and budget constraints.
  • Collaborate closely with cross-functional teams including Project Management, Hardware, Software, Supply Chain and Compliance.
  • Travel to suppliers or customers as required, including international travel.
  • Adhere to relevant legislation and company policies relating to ethics, compliance, cyber security, product development, labour and human rights, and environmental responsibility.

  • Lead the mechanical design for products and subsystems across the entire lifecycle.
  • Make informed, complex mechanical design decisions aligned with project and business requirements.
  • Apply advanced expertise in mechanical design, analysis and integration across complex engineering challenges.
  • Lead structured problem-solving activities and technical reviews.
  • Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to varied audiences.
  • Identify and implement continuous improvement initiatives aligned with organisational goals.
  • Ensure adherence to relevant industry standards and regulatory requirements.
Core Competencies
  • Proficiency in 3D CAD modelling, drafting and design for manufacture/assembly.
  • Applies sound engineering principles and validation tools.
  • Supports full lifecycle product development including prototyping and testing.
  • Identifies design issues and implements effective solutions with attention to detail.
  • Communicates design intent clearly and collaborates effectively across teams and with external suppliers.
  • Maintains accurate design documentation and contributes to continuous improvement initiatives.
Education and Experience
  • BSc/BEng (or higher) in Mechanical or Product Design Engineering.
  • Proven experience in mechanical design, ideally within a high-volume manufacturing environment.
  • Skilled in SolidWorks for 3D modelling and drawing creation.
  • Understanding of manufacturing processes such as casting, injection moulding and machining.
  • Strong understanding of design for quality and design for manufacture principles.
  • Excellent communication and collaboration skills.
  • Fluent in written and spoken English.
  • Willingness to work onsite at least four days per week.
Beneficial
  • Experience designing for harsh marine environments including sealing, corrosion resistance and vibration mitigation.
