These markets include aerospace and defence, factory automation, air and water quality environmental monitoring, electronics design and development, oceanographic research, deepwater oil and gas exploration and production, medical imaging and pharmaceutical research.

This opportunity sits within the Electrical Hardware Engineering team, in the Chelmsford Space Imaging business unit. Space science is at the core of understanding the Universe's origins and future. The sensor device technology includes Charge Coupled Devices (CCDs), CMOS image detectors (visible and infra-red) and their associated Read Out ICs (ROICs). The imaging sensors developed and tested at the Chelmsford site have been used on humanity's most important space imaging missions, including the Hubble Telescope, Keplar, GAIA, Mars Rovers, New Horizons, and Rosetta.

Position Summary and Responsibilities:

This position is open to all levels of experience. Work includes both the design and testing of cameras required to characterise and verify the performance of our space imaging sensors. The electrical hardware is required to control the drive and acquisition of our high-speed Imaging Sensors. The Engineer will be working in cross-functional teams, reporting to Project Managers and Project Lead Engineers, to ensure project requirements are met and verified in line with the defined project plan. The engineer will also ensure our capabilities are maintained at the cutting edge, and are aligned with our development roadmaps. For experienced applicants, the role will involve mentoring and coaching of other engineers in the team, as well as chairing design reviews.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Full PCB design for space applications including component selection, schematic capture, analysis, documentation, stack-up definition, and administration of external layout activity.
  • Preparation and presentation of concepts and designs that meet the requirements, driven both by internal and external customer needs.
  • Drive system architecture trade-off discussions at Systems Requirement Review and Preliminary Design Reviews.
  • Detailing of system architecture and interface diagrams for gate review documentation.
  • Preparing and presenting all necessary documentation relevant to the electrical design for gate reviews.
  • Maintain Compliance and Verification Matrix of compliance for electrical hardware requirements.
  • Proactive and constructive participation in schematic and layout design reviews.
  • Taking a strong lead with verification and testing of electronics, and preparation of well-structured and clear associated documentation.

Skills, Experience & Qualifications:

  • Knowledge of PCB design approaches required for high-speed circuitry.
  • Ability to meet requirements efficiently, minimising design effort.
  • Demonstration of working to standards for high reliability.
  • PCB CAD skills are essential, with an advantage for candidates who have Altium or Cadence experience.
  • Strong and in-depth understanding of electronics and electrical interfaces.
  • Space electronics experience considered advantageous.
