Our client is a global manufacturer of packaging, operating a network of manufacturing sites across Europe, the Americas and Asia.
This search is for one of their UK sites, based in Greater Manchester - a stable, well-established plant of circa 130 people.
The site is an important part of the wider group and uses a combination of blow moulding and injection moulding processes.
The Role
This is a fully operations-focused Plant Manager position, with responsibility for day-to-day plant performance across safety, quality, delivery and cost.
Reporting to the Senior Operations Director – Europe, the Plant Manager leads a team including the Production Manager, Maintenance Manager, Production Planning & Supply Chain Manager, and Process Engineering.
Finance and HR are also based on-site, reporting into their respective functional leads while cooperating with the Plant Manager.
Responsibilities and Main Tasks
- Manage and control plant operations with a focus on safety, quality, delivery performance and costs.
- Ensure the implementation and continuous development of a sustainable lean culture in production and indirect areas.
- Continuously improve the efficiency, productivity and quality of plant processes and management systems.
- Lead and support cross-functional projects at plant level.
- Optimise inventories and production processes by applying lean manufacturing methods.
- Train and coach employees in lean methods and tools, and support their practical application.
- Analyse, design and implement improvements along the value stream in cooperation with relevant interfaces.
Requirements
Education & Knowledge
A strong technical understanding of plastics - whether from a plastic packaging or plastic moulding experience background - is crucial for this role.
- University degree with good business knowledge, and in-depth know-how in the plastics processing industry as well as production and supply chain processes.
- Good understanding of project management, value creation processes and process optimisation methods (e. g. Kaizen, CIP/KVP, SMED, TPM, 5S, Poka Yoke, Kanban).
- Good knowledge of MS Office programs; very good English skills in written and spoken form.
- Professional Experience
- Several years of management experience with direct responsibility for employees.
- Experience working with employee representative bodies (e. g. works councils), and in dealing with public authorities and institutions.
- Other Requirements
- Strong social competence and the ability to motivate employees.
- A pragmatic working style, combining assertiveness with conceptual, analytical and strong implementation skills.
- Very good organisational skills and solution orientation, with a high level of commitment and self-motivation.
